This is fact not rumor. I did mine, took about 15 minutes total.
You will need a 5/16-18 tap and an "F" drill. You can also use a 1/4 and wiggle it to git it large enough for the tap to start.
You can hand tap or use a drill to tap (slow speed) with as I did. (I never use oil when tapping thin steel)
You'll have to remove the propane tank cover to be able to work on the back hole.
Be wary of chips falling into the jack inners, get creative to prevent/remove those chips.

    Good luck.

PS I helped a friend do his but the tailgate on his Chevy truck still would not clear.

Not sure why one would not use oil when tapping threads but, each to his own I guess.

Because it's thin low grade steel and it's not necessary.
If it were thicker material then yes.
I'm a manufacturing engineer with 40 years shop experience and I've done plenty of this kind of work.

Jay. Not to turn this into a back and forth but, an engineer is one thing, and tech/mechanic is another. The fact it is thin steel is another good reason to use oil. As the tap cuts threads, the thing you don't want is the shavings binding up and compromising what little amount of threads that will be produced.
