Exactly. Going from a 24 Gallon fuel tank on my 2017 Silverado that got 7-9 mpg towing to a 22 gallon diesel and should get 11-12 mpg towing. So expecting a 20-30% improvement. Also, like you said, torque of an HD at 460 lbs! Before I purchased I verified sticker weights on vehicle, 1600 lbs weight capacity ✅ and tongue weight something like 1100 lbs ✅. Lastly, I’m going from a 6 speed to a 10 speed transmission.

All this looks good to me on paper, and I value advice and opinions either way. Until I take it out for a long pull.....

Will take a lot of miles driven with the better fuel economy to cover the extra dollars for the diesel engine. And not since Covid hit, but prior to that, local diesel fuel prices had a 20% to 25% disadvantage over 87 octane fuel. Even the off road diesel (no highway use tax) cost more than 87 octane.

The diesel and the 6.2 option are the exact same price

2400 dollars I believe. Not much at all even over the 5.3

With the 3.23 axle ratio, 8 speed transmission, 87 octane fuel, and not exceeding 65 mph, our 2017 6.2L averages slightly better than 11 MPG with a 26 gallon tank when towing the RV.

Would love to have a 2500 with diesel but spouse can’t stand having to climb up into one. Prefer to keep my well trained wife than upgrading my truck.

I would have loved a 6.2 L, but those are only available on the RST and higher and you need to order the packages to get the right bells and whistles. That engine would have cost me a lot more. 8 speed transmission, or 10 is good, certainly better than 6. Is that 26 gallon tank available on a crew cab? I have a 4 & 6 year old, so needed a crew cab. I would have gotten a bigger fuel tank if available.

Price was not higher for the diesel. I paid $48,500 after discounts. For fuel prices, yeah, jury will be out and we shall see. What I do like though with fuel mpg is not having to stop as often.

Once again everyone, I love and appreciate the dialogue.

With the current mileage on your 2017 has you at about 30000 miles a year. Your savings over a 6.2 will be huge yearly when you are empty as most of us are the majority of the time

My truck will be 3 years old in a few months and it only has 27000 miles on it. Fuel economy doesn’t concern me
    Enjoy and let us know

It is a vehicle I would be interested in for sure as I will never own a truck other than a GMC

We have the new 2021 Chevy 1500 LTZ with the 6.2. Avg about 15 mg around town and 20-21 on the highway...without the trailer. With our trailer (22MLE) we get between 10 and 12. I do have the HD tow pkg which rates the truck for 11,900 tow capacity. I have no complaints, plenty of power (420hp with 460 lbs of torque). Was not cheap, but worth it with all the bells and whistles...including cameras and tire pressure/temperature monitors for the trailer tires.... One thing though is the 24 gal fuel tank. Wish it was bigger...

The diesel gets 30 so they say. 50 percent increase
Me personally, I will stick with my 5.3

I am not into diesels...to costly initially and maintenance is extremely high as well as any repair parts... Big BUCKS for just a fuel pump. The mileage you gain doesn't work for me. I'll stick with my 6.2 I had the 5.3 before,. it was a great engine. Just wanted more power and towing capacity.

The 3.0 diesel and the 6.2 are the same price and I think you can get the diesel in a cheaper trim than the 6.2
But I was commenting to the op who drives over 30 k a year. He will save a lot over a 6.2
