I didn’t even know about the extra registration fee for a 3500. Check with my state and they do charge base on GVWR.

Tell the dealer the full weight of the rig, also. I assume this is same in all US states, but in NC when I registered the dealer submitted me for a 25,000 lbs tag. The vehicle tag accounts for the GWVR of the fully connected rig. I had no idea either, but my sales guy knew to ask how we are going to use the truck.

    Doesn't the 3500 have a 7250 pound RAWR while the 2500 has a 6600 pound RAWR?

My 2020 Silverado has a 6600 RAWR. I wonder if there's different axels for gas and diesel versions.

I think gas gets an 11.5" and diesel gets a 12" ring gear so different axles. And SRW diesel trucks are detuned slightly to limit max torque at low speeds.

I learned something. I thought the 11.5 ring gear was on all 2500HD's and the 12" was on the 3500's but you're saying it's 11.5" for gas engines with a 6390Lb rear axel and it's the 12" ring gear for the diesels with the 6600Lb axel on the 2500's and 7250Lb axel on the 3500's. So the spring pack and the slightly larger rear axel on the 3500 are the only things providing a lot more payload capacity. I have 3310Lbs. of payload capacity on my vehicle specific sticker.

On the 2021 both 2500 and 3500 diesel have the same rear end gear ratio. I think the rear ends may be identical.

So then the only differences are the spring pack and the axel itself that has a rating of 650Lb more than what they put on the 2500's.

I’m not 100% sure but my research point towards that direction. It does make sense for GM to use the same axle on both with the engine and transmission setup.
