    Extended Warranty/Insurance policies

    Hello,
Was just on an RV web site Road Less Travelled and I came upon a discussion about extended Warranty/ insurance. Our mfg. warranty expires in June and was considering the purchase of extended coverage. I declined the RV dealerships offer of $6-8K for a five year plan. The authors of the web site mentioned a company out of San Diego named Wholesale Warranties. They also discussed some of the differences between a “standard” and “exclusion” plan. I am curious if anyone has dealt with this company or has any recommendations for aftermarket plans. I anxiously await any and all responses!!

If you are spending $1000 a year on repairs, something is seriously wrong. A tube of sealant, some Eternabond and a couple of screws and light bulbs is a normal year. $6-$8K for 5 years is insane.

If you read their other articles from that blog they are very biased towards whatever product they are talking about, most likely due to affiliation. They even said how great Camping World was for a fridge replacement [emoji1787].

I would also save your $$$ as mentioned above, extended warranties are more like insurance policies than anything else, some will use it, most wont, the company is in the business of making money, not handing it out.

I bought a plan from Wholesale Warranties for a new 2600RB for 7 years at $2,100 with a $200 deductible. So $300 a year sounded good and they let you do your own maintenance, but you have to keep receipts and record everything. That was a month ago. Now I have been rethinking that decision and they give 60 days and you can cancel with a full refund.

Agreed and that is precisely why we declined! I guess they figure a sucker comes along every day.

Thank you for responding. Since you are reconsidering Wholesale, I believe I am going just put some money aside in a rainy day fund and use it for repairs as they come along. Interestingly they offered us a 5 year for approx. the same price.

Yes, when I looked at some of there other articles as you did it became evidently apparent that they are sponsored or have some sort of affliction with the various companies. Thank you for your valued input.

It looks like you've figured it out, but here's my two cents worth: My wife found a very good description of extended service plans a while back (they are not warranties, but rather insurance policies with lots of fine print). They are another form of legalized gambling. The company is betting that nothing breaks that would cause them to pay out more than you paid for the policy; you're betting it will. As in all forms of legalized gambling, the house usually wins. Otherwise, these companies wouldn't be in business or make a profit. We prefer to set money aside regularly (earning interest) and pay for repairs as they come up.
