Take a look at this www.youtube.com/watch?v=74CQxa5BLU to see how this fellow used white vinegar to clean out his hot water heater.

A citric acid descaling solution will do a better job and faster. Living in the mountains, we have incredibly hard water and descaling is a standard ritual for unsoftened lines like our fridge and plumbed coffeemaker. Do the water heater every couple of years.

the fellow on youtube made an L shaped pvc pipe, had a fitting to connect to the water heater, piece of pipe attached to that, that stuck outside the body of the RV with an ell and a longer piece of pipe sticking up (about 20 in). He used a funnel to fill the pipe and heater with 12 gallons of white vinegar and let it set over night. He drained it (used the relief value to let air in and turned the longer piece of pipe down. None of the pipe was glued.
