I have 3 trips planned for this year, all with every night a reservation. It looks like it's going to be mandatory in the future to do it this way. What a bummer trying to plan trips a year in advance with no flexibility.
I seldom stay in commercial campgrounds unless for one night when traveling down the interstates. But, I get this feeling they will be like hotels, and go with a nightly rate based on demand and availability. "If we only have 3 sites left and the demand is there, we can get 50% more for the site".2020 Reflection 273MK

Yeah we have seen that with notices of increase rates for holidays and special area events and probably whenever the spirit moves them. A lot of the issue is where you're going and at what time of the year. Our Disney trip in June had to be a year in advance and with the uncertainty of covid also playing a roll in it but we expected that being Disney. Our trip from Disney in June up to the Bristol area and continuing north up toward southern Ohio, we just completed and found a little problem making reservations, not terrible though. We prefer reservations so we know we have a spot at a minimum of 10 days to two weeks or a month.
This year our wintering in Galveston, we didn't have to reserve that far in advance but we did to get a special rate that included electricity. Normally the rate would have been 699 plus electricity but we got a special rate of 599 which included electricity, so that was a good surprise. That's $20 / night. The RV Park was never close to being full. But it also had good amenities, cable TV, heated pool, store, propane, pickle ball etc, didn't expect the great Texas freeze out through!.
We don't mind State Parks if we can get at least 2 weeks, and they are updated. We don't like moving every week and we will not stay at these kinds of parks (reading reviews and personal experience) if they are old and outdated no matter how cheap they are. Terrible power hookups, broken power receptacles, over hanging low tree limbs, very narrow roads and sites, vehicles parked all over the road. So we are picky about National, State and COE parks. Some are extremely nice.
Yeah it can be more of a time consuming task these days, its just the nature of the popularity. But we recall camping with our kids back in the late 70s, 80, and into the 90s, online reservations was unheard of and even back then you couldn't expect to just show up on a weekend or long weekend and get a spot, especially on a holiday weekend.Last edited by Steven@147; 03-28-2021 at 11:50 AM.

We are full timers. We left Seattle in March after receiving our new 310GK in Nov and doing a lot of modifications to it for a couple of months.
We made/have reservations for Seattle to Central CA and back to Seattle (3 month trip) and then from Seattle to Boston (4 month trip June - Sep). Some places are just one night (Plevna, MT). Other stops are for a week (Soo Locks Campground in Sault Saint Marie, MI). We have places to stay over the Memorial Weekend, 4th of July, and Labor Day. It's been an adventure and has taken a bit of time each evening, but in this new age you do what makes you comfortable - and having a reservation relieves a lot of stress in OUR lives.(Ordered 7/13/20) 2021 Solitude 310GK, FBP, DP, HP, Toppers, Solar, MORryde 7K IS w/Disc Brakes

We just completed making reservations for a round trip CA to Michigan and back. For camping in June/July. Mostly KOAs, who have online reservation system. The few independent campgrounds - 2 I had to call, 2 I filled out a form and they "got back to me". And the rest had online reservations, although a few of them I did have to call because their system would freeze up. Only had one campground that we had to use the "just in case they're full" choice.

Son just made the trip from Boise to SpaceCoast, NC, VA, MD, and finally NH - 4500 miles. Didn't have a reservation issue - that was first two weeks in Feb. Now we get to try out his 17MKE later this year - these 15 hour one day drives between NH and NC are too long for this old guy. Besides, I figure he's got most of the bugs worked out by now. All goes well and supply chain revives, we'll order our Solitude this winter a year later than we planned. Hope the campsite recovery happens.

I've always made reservations in advance as I don't want any surprises. It is extremely difficult to do when campgrounds want you to fill out the form and they will get back to you. Tough to plan a long trip with numerous destinations this way. For this year, I avoided all of them and just went with KOA's or others that still had on-line reservations.

All you can find is the call-in/fill out forms campgrounds because that's all that is left. All the ones that accept online reservations have been swarmed by bots buying up all the sites.
