    New Converter Question

Howdy Folks, quick question on a converter upgrade. Currently my rig has the horrible WFCO 9855 Deck Mount Converter. In my previous rig I upgraded to a Progressive Dynamics 9260.

I would like to do the same thing, with a twist. I would like to go to say 9270 or 9280, but not sure if the wiring can support the higher amp charging rates.

Am I ok to go to higher amperage? I know the batts will only pull what they need.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I think 10 gauge wire would be sufficient since you won't be drawing over 30A. What does the installation manual call for?

    New Converter Question

Hi Bob, haven’t purchased anything yet, but the current installation looks to be 10 ga.

Quick question though, if I install 60, 70, or 80 amp charger, how would it not draw more than 30 amps?

Are you sure about the 10Gauge wiring?
I have not seen convertor wiring that small in any of my trailers. Mine have all had 6GA.

If the fuse in the red wire coming off the battery is a 30A, then it is 10 gauge. You would not have a fuse rated at a different rating than the wire unless a shade tree electrician decided to do it that way.

Take a look at the photo that shows the converter and DC wiring.

Was not thinking about the fuse. Excellent point. Kind of defeats the purpose of a larger than 30 amp charger if it is limited to 30 amps...lol

What are the thoughts of putting a larger fuse in if the wires support it.

If not I will just go with the PD 9260 and call it a day.

Check your converter circuit. The 9260 takes a 15 Amp breaker and the 9280 needs a 20 amp circuit.

The Black and White wire on the converter DC out are probably 6 Awg. Usually 50A rigs have 6 Awg and 30A rigs usually have 8 Awg.
The auto resetting CB amp rating on the trailer frame would be one thing to check, what its amp rating is.

My wire for the converter and to the battery was 6 Awg and marked: Alan Wire MTW 600V, UL AWM 1283, TEW 105°C
Alan Wire shows this type of wire's insulation used in wet locations to be rated at 75°C.
Since TTs have the wires down on the frame, I guess that would get wet.

6 Awg Ampacity from NFPA 70 Table 310.16 for wire with 75°C insulation rating is 65A. MTW, AWM, TEW don't show up in 310.16 as they're not for building wiring. NFPA 79 does reference MTW wire.
If this was automotive or marine wire it's ampacity would be rated different, like Blue Sea's chart based on ABYC

That is what they say. But when I looked at the wattage spec., it fit nicely into what a 15 amp breaker can do. I then looked at how my Momentum was actually wired. It has a 20 anp receptacle mounted to the back side of the breaker panel wired directly to the 15 amp breaker. IOW, the bottleneck is the breaker. There is no reason I could not switch it to a 20 amp breaker. I chose to leave the 15 amp there, and just plugged my 9280 into the 20 amp receptacle. It has been working fine as I thought it would. I do have a 20 amp breaker on hand, and should it become an issue I will do the swap.... And report it here.

The 20A recommendation is a combination of CYA and the 80% rule for continuous use. 80% of 15 is 12 or 1440W very near the 1300W listed draw. Then there's 'inrush' that can briefly be many times the normal load.

    So how much C for Y A?
