Of course, the CA DMV doesn't put everything together for easy reference, you have to sift through the manual. What is your GVWR? That will determine what you have to do.

and a link to the pdf:

Thank you offtohavasu. The GVWR for my 5th Wheel is 12,400 lbs. This means I fall under the guidelines on page 12 of the PDF. I'll show that to the CA DMV at my appointment next week.

It is not uncommon for CA DMV to not understand. I have certainly heard this story before. When I went to get my endorsement I got the deer in headlights look. Got frustrated and left unsatisfied. Will try again.

According to their handbook a health questionnaire nor a driving test were required. A vision test was required; but they did not do that. Did anyone else have to submit a health questionnaire and/or take an actual driving test for the 5th wheel endorsement?
I had the same issue. The regular folks at the DMV offices are very confused about the Trailer endorsement because so few people actually comply with the law. I had to talk to the supervisor who had to call someone and they finally figure out that if my 5th wheel was between 10,000 and 15,000 they could give me the endorsement once I passes the written test. I did have to send in the health questionnaire, (not the health exam, they get all confused about that too.) Just go back ask to talk to a supervisor and tell them you qualify for the "41-Class A restricted to operating 5th wheel travel trailer between 10,000 and 15,000 lbs GVWR" endorsement. FYI Those are the exact words on the back of my Class C drivers license.

    Good luck

Thanks just dude. I'll let the DMV know what is printed on the back of your license. I've already passed the written test and turned in the heath questionnaire so hopefully my return trip to the DMV will result in getting my endorsement.

This may or may not be a thing you care about, but the barcode on the back encodes the information on the front including your home address and DOB. Just a heads up.
