    Silverado 1500 Tire Options

I want to start off by saying that I know I need a bigger truck but with today's market, I will have to wait until next year (hopefully).

My current TV is a 1500 Silverado Crew Cab Short Bed Z71. The tires that came on the truck are Wrangler SRA P265-65-18's. I am towing a 2021 Imagine 2670MK with a dry tongue weight of 810lbs and an "almost" loaded tongue weight of 1,150lbs (using a sherline tongue scale). My current hitch (which will be upgraded) is an E2 10,000 / 1,000. We were not expecting this much tongue weight based off the manufacturer website.

I am looking to upgrade my tires to something more suitable for towing to reduce movement/sway, and numerous comments say to go with E rated tires. After speaking with several tire shops, they recommend not going to an E rated tire because my truck is not set up for that type of tire. So what is a good option for a 1/2 ton that was built with P rated tires? Using the load index scale, would a 114 or 116 be a good alternative or do I need the jump to E rated? Most E rated will require me to change to a 265-70-18, which does not seem like a big deal. The truck is a daily driver with several weekend camping trips within 100 miles but highway speeds can be white knuckle so I stay in the slow lane. As mentioned in the beginning I do plan to upgrade to a 3/4 ton next year.

I doubt tires would help much. Kind of silly to spend 1000 dollars on tires for a truck you are getting rid of
Unless of course they need replacing

Yes, it is probably crazy to upgrade tires for a year, but trying to improve handling and be safe. Current tires are original (2016) and around 55,000 miles so getting close.

Go with the E rated LT tires.

Believe it or not, the P metric stock tires on 1/2 tons are the weakest link.

I have C rated LTs on my truck but when I picked my trailer up for a 1300 km trip I had my P rated winter tires on and it towed flawlessly

Tires may help him a bit but I personally don’t think he will be any happier

It is a bandaid for your situation but I would consider buying a pro-pride to contain some of the poor towing feel
You could always use it on the new truck or sell it and recoup some money

Imo rear living and rear kitchen trailers shouldn’t even be built. Putting all that weight behind the axles isn’t good for towing experience

Yeah, it's a start. If you push on the side of the bed of the truck with P tires on, you can watch the sidewalls flex. Doesn't make for great sway control...

Thank you for the responses. Has anyone heard of an issue with changing from a P rated to an E rated tire, other than a stiffer ride and possibly a slight hit to fuel mileage?

Noise will be the biggest change

Mileage and noise will depend on tread design. The more agressive the tread the more noise and less mileage.
The E rated tires on my Ram 2500 are very quiet. They are called ATs but the tread is more like a highway tread.
I had GY SRAs on my 1500. Yes they were very soft and mushy with the trailer behind it. I changed to a D rated tire and it made a slight difference. That truck had 20 inch rims and the choices were limited.
I would suggest going to "the tire rack" and looking at tires and their specs and ratings. I'ts a good resource whether you buy from them or not.
