Missing pin which holds insert into receiver

I am not familiar with the proper terms so I apologize in advance.

Recently I was talking with a camping neighbor and he mentioned a situation which scared me.
He said when he left Orlando his pin was in the bar holding the insert in place. When he arrived
at Fort Mountain GA it was GONE. The bar stayed in place in spite of no pin, which I couldn't imagine.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    Thanks for any responses:

No I haven't but you can purchase a locking pin. I bought a set of locks and one is in there but have never used it.

    Something like this:

I imagine you are talking about a standard hitch pin with a hair clip retainer. Hair clips get lost all the time due to being deformed, breaking from corrosion, and, frankly, troublemakers at rest stops. A locking hitch pin is the only way to go IMO.

I will definitely be buying the locking pin.
I am amazed the trailer stayed connected to TV.
Seems like the motion of TV and TT would work the hitch pin (thanks geotext1) out of its socket.
    scary situation.
    Thanks for the info:

Once the weight distribution bars are set, there is a significant amount of force on the end going into the receiver, since it is essentially trying to lift the truck rear end, and jamming itself in there. So very likely it would not slip, at least until a major bump on the road helped it overcome the friction....

I have a locking hitch pin, and I carry a standard non locking one as a spare.
I also carry a spare coupler locking pin as well as spare pins for the torsion bars.
It's like carrying an umbrella to ward off the rain.

I also have the locking pin just as an added safety. Not really against theft as they are easy to cut off but more for just in case and the trouble makers. I also carry a spare.

After pulling the same tt for 23 years I have only lost one spring retainer and that was to one of my spring bars. After purchasing our tt new, the 1st thing I did was buy a Rubbermaid tub to keep all of the misc bits and pcs together. Everything fits in the tub except for the spring bars and the hitch.

FYI: We have a new tt on order and I plan to stick with my same old tried and true system. Although, I might buy a hitch lock to keep from having to remove it while camping. I have always removed it right after unhitching to prevent it from getting stolen while shopping or sight seeing.

I also remove the hitch to prevent theft and to save my knee cap.
