Assume a minimum tongue weight of 12.5% of the GVWR of the trailer. Plus the weight of the WD hitch.
Subtract that from your payload. Also subtract anything added since the truck rolled off the line - bed liner, running boards, topper, floor mats, better tires, old french fries, etc. Ford factors in 150 lb driver. The remaining number will be the max amount of driver overage, passenger, dog, tools, etc. that you can load into the truck.
Check the sticker on the bottom of the receiver for it's maximum - you might be surprised. That sometimes is the first limit to consider.
A scale will tell the true tale, so if seriously considering going near the limits, it is a good idea to weight the truck first to see how much real capacity you actually have.
That first line above will give a "fat" number, as most never load to the GVWR of the trailer. But it doesn't give you a huge margin to play with, either...
ALL published specs give a wildly too light tongue weight number. If you were to actually have it, you would be in the ditch right away due to massive uncontrolled trailer sway.
BTW - my combo is as close as I want to get. HDPP, or 2166 payload.
Would never consider a longer trailer....too much tail to wag the dog.Last edited by sande005; 05-03-2021 at 07:40 AM.

I towed a 2650 with a 3.5 EB F-150. Even after switching to LT tires I never really felt I was in full control.
Upgraded to a F-250 and never looked back.2019 F-250 Supercab

I really like the 2800BH & 2670MK as well, probably maxed out with one of those, correct?

I was towing our 2670mk with 2018 f150 3.5. It was too much trailer. Pushed us around and also a lot of away issues. Got a f350 drw now and life’s good!

Most of the issues concerning weight have already been well covered.
I find this to be a decision about safety. In my opinion using factory weights
are notoriously light. No battery, Propane, WDH or personal stuff for camping and
number of people in truck etc.
This is a personal decision about ability to withstand stress when towing.
Many people do it for years with lighter trucks and no problems especially if taking short trips.
For myself I want excess payload and more truck than trailer, but that's just me.
