    Extended warranties

We are doing the PDI & picking up our MKE17 on Friday. A sales guy called to tell me he wants to talk with us about extended warranties for interior fabrics, wheels/tires and exterior paint when we pick it up. I'm generally not an extended warranty guy but am curious what you think since you own Grand Design trailers.

Extended warranties are great profit makers for the dealer. Most don't bite on those offers. They'll also offer a special coating to protect everything , most don't bite for that either.

Plenty of topics on this if you use the search function. It's more like an insurance policy, they are in the business of making money, not handing it out. Better off putting that money aside for repairs down the road, especially if you are handy, skip the warranty.

If you are handy and are good at maintenance you will probably be ok without one. I had an extended warranty on my first two trailers and never needed them. I bought my current trailer used and an extended warranty came with it. After reading the exclusions list, I don't think I will ever have a "perfect" claim to use it. My opinion and it is an opinion is, don't. Set aside some money and faithfully do your preventative maintenance. You will be money ahead. Frank.

When we bought our Solitude, they of course tried to sell the extended warranty. Didn't sound too bad when they show you the difference in monthly payment, but over the life of the loan, it was over $4,000. You can pay for a lot of repairs for $4,000. I declined.

The responses are, in my opinion, right with a couple of exceptions. If your not handy or able to adjust slides, fix or replace AC, fireplace... (need to understand exclusions) or don’t have the discipline to put aside the monthly premium, your better off with the warranty.

I did purchase the extended warranty and have had a broken leaf spring, multiple slide repairs, refrigerators repair and water heater repair. For me, I’m way a head and didn’t have to deal with the frustration that comes with “simple” repairs. At age 71, I don’t want that frustration.

Remember, it’s an insurance policy. As with all insurance policies, the company will make money on most and loose on some.

You just need assess your ability to save the money on a consistent basis and do the repairs or pay someone to do it for you.

    Good luck with your decision.

We bought a 5 year warranty for around $1500, which normally we would not do. We did not finance it. I’m not much of a mechanic and it was our first new RV

It’s paid off for us. We’ve had several major plumbing & A/C repairs, and a busted shackle, that were beyond the warranty that would have been too hard for me to fix, and were costly. One being the replacement of the entire Nautilus system

In fact, the RV is in the shop now for another plumbing issue related to the black tank, and a stove problem. The warranty is still valid thru September so this repair will cost just the $50 deductible

So for us, it’s been worth the cost.

Thanks to all for the comments and counsel. I am not handy and my wife gets anxious when I use power tools. I like the idea of saving the money and if until needed. If they make an offer that seems reasonable I will probably buy a warranty.

    Thanks again!
