Fifth Wheel Hitch
We just purchased GD 346FLS and we also bought a chevy 3500 short bed with the fifth wheel prep. Can anyone recommend what type of hitch to purchase ?
Thanks

I am picking up a 378MBS in a couple of weeks and went with the B&W Companion hitch. I allows me to put the pin 7" behind to provide more clearance for turning without the use of a heavy slider. I am getting the turnover ball mounted unit but you can also get the same hitch for the pucks.

I've only ever used auto slider hitches. I had a Pullrite and many years ago and am now using a Demco Hitchiker and am very satisfied.
It is heavy, requiring no less than 2 strong people to remove it from the bed (or a hoist thing).
I like the comfort feeling that I never have to worry about hitting the cab, no matter the slope or angle, I don't have to exit my vehicle to allow it to slide.
I'm going to take exception about moving the hitch point rear-ward of the axel (or puck mounting point) as it skews the weight distribution between the front and rear.
Full disclosure - I have ordered a long bed (till SRW) and will be changing to a Reese Gooseneck to gain weight carrying capacity and loose the 300 pound hitch.Larry KE4DMG

We have an Air-Safe hitch for 8 years now and really like it. It takes out 95% of the banging and chucking you can get while towing. There are different makers of this type of hitch that you could investigate that work quite well.

We considered everything available and went with the Pullrite Slider. Never have to worry about inadvertently trashing the 5th wheel and/or truck cab. I figured there are enough things to think about when pulling or backing a big 5th wheel without adding that. Because of the stress on the trailer axles and associated equipment, I try to avoid sharps turns, particularly on pavement, so I may never actually need the clearance. However, without the slider, I would be limited to 45° turns - not enough.

A slider is the safest route, but they are heavy, especially the autosliders. I had a Demco autoslider and loved it. Very similar to the Pullrite, but is height adjustable and I liked the jaw setup better. Auto-sliders just do what they need to do. You can get by with a non-slider, Andersen, etc which will get you a decent amount of angle. The downside to those options are that you MUST pay attention - a quick distraction can result in damage and uneven ground changes the whole geometry of the situation.

The Pullright single point attaches to the ball in your truck bed so there are no modification to your truck. It weighs about 135 lbs unless you break it down. It handles big trailers. It has a smaller footprint than the Anderson hitch.
The Anderson Ultimate hitch is cheaper and much lighter (35 lbs), but it is less rugged. It does not require any modifications to your truck.

We tow our 310GK with a 20k B&W Companion hitch, puck system. Works like a charm.
