Tundra w/ Imagine XLS 17 MKE payload exceeds tire capacity
Hi,
forgive me if this should have gone to an existing thread. (dang newbies) We just bought a 2021 Imagine 17 MKE from the orignial owner.
I am confused as to why Toyota would make a Tundra with such a low payload capacity and low tire load capacity.
FYI the Imagine came with 800lb Fastway E2 weight distibution bars.
Here's the info.
Truck:
Tundra SR5 5.7L V8 Truck Double Cab
GVWR: 6700lb
Base curb wtg: 5100
Max Payload: 1600lb
Tire load 1320lb
tow capacity: 9900lb
Cargo in Truck:
4 passengers: 560 Usually only the two of us at 280lb
Tongue/Hitch weight: 15% of 6400 Trailer GVWR = 959
13% of 6400 trailer GVWR = 831
Total cargo passengers and hitch weight = 1559
From the Keep your Daydream:
Hitched
Available Payload 81.00
New GVW 6,619.00
NEW GCVW 12,055.00
Towing Capcity 10,200.00
So there is only 81lb of leftover payload. But we wanted to add bikes into the truck bed, which would require a rack. I guess other cargo could go in the trailer. What's a good % to be under payload capacity, to keep your truck happy?
But more importantly, we have exceeded the Tire load of 1320lb with our cargo of 1559lb.
Why have tires that can't support the advertised payload?
Do I have this correct?
We're now looking at a Ford F 150. But we did really like that Tundra.
If you're wondering we pulled it home with a rented Uhaul 2021 Silverado. It did fine, except for some rocking. I think you guys call it porpoising.
Thank so much for all your help! This is a wonderful resource!
I've learned so much.

Couple of suggestions. Look at this survey thread on actual hitch weights, in particular post#51. They have a 2021 17MKE.
https://www.mygrandrv.com/forum/show...t-Survey/page6
Second, you may find that your actual payload is more than the door sticker. I took my Tundra to a CAT scale, just me in it, and filled the gas tank just before getting onto the scale. I took that weight from the CAT ticket (curb weight) and subtracted it from my truck’s GVWR to get my actual payload which in my case was ~115# more than the sticker.
Also, depending how you pack the trailer and if carrying water in the fresh tank may increase your tongue weight. If you are still close on your numbers you could consider getting a lite weight WDH like an Andersen ~60# total.
Edited to say that I subtracted out my personal weight from the CAT scale ticket to arrive at the curb weight.Last edited by Tigger1; 05-10-2021 at 02:15 PM.

Tundra w/ Imagine XLS 17 MKE payload exceeds tire capacity
Your payload is 1320 not 1600
You are confusing that with tires for some reason
Tundras have abysmal payloads. Always have

The other thing to consider is the fact that your sticker shows that they installed passenger rated tires on your truck. I have LT tires on mine, 3195 lbs at 80 PSI each. I know that it does nothing (officially) to increase the payload capacity, but it's nice to have the sturdier tires.

@jnbbikenhike
Regardless if you stay with the Tundra or move onto another truck, it is a good idea to visit a CAT scale so you know what you’re towing.
If you do, here are a couple links to help.
CAT Scale locator by entering zip:
https://catscale.com/cat-scale-locator/
You can also download the WeighMyTruck CAT scale app. Create an account with your info and credit card. When you go to the scale open the app, it will recognize your location, pull onto the scale and weigh. You will get the scale ticket emailed to you, no need to go inside the building. Cost about $12-$14. Subsequent weighs are $3-$6.
Travel trailer weights calculator:
http://www.towingplanner.com/ActualW...ailerCatScales
This calculator requires you weigh 3 times to see the complete picture. Then you will know what you actually have as opposed to guessing.
1. Weigh truck & trailer all loaded for camping with the WDH engaged
2. Same as 1. but WDH disengaged
3. Truck only
Enter the numbers from the 3 weighs into the calculator and the results will be at the bottom.2010 Tundra SR5 DC 5.7L 4x4

If that tundra has the OEM Michelin LTX AT2 tires, they are a P series tire with a max capacity of 2600lbs when inflated to 51 psi, not the 30 psi it says on the yellow sticker in the door jamb. When fully inflated, these tires will support 5200 lbs per axle, which is 1,000 lbs more than the rear axle is rated for anyway. In my experience, these michelins are pretty good tires overall, even hauling or towing heavy. Much better than the paper thin Goodyear tires that came on my f150 years ago.
That being said, I prefer a LT tire for towing and I like to go off-road so a beefier sidewall is pretty much a requirement.
The Tundra payload capacity is pretty low for a modern half ton truck. We are right at the maximum capacity (probably over a little on some trips) with our tundra and 2400bh fully ready to hit the road, when weighed on the CAT scale. I’ve spent some time at the scale dialing in the Equalizer WD hitch and the result is our tundra doesn’t look, drive, or feel like it’s anywhere close to being at maximum capacity. YMMV.2020 Grand Design Imagine 2400BH

Thanks to all the Tundra truck owners replies!
The truck actually has Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684ii tires.
We punted and bought a Ford F150 and are very happy with it.
