Bike rack
Want to mount bike rack on rear bumper of imagine xls 22 rbe. Would have to remove spare tire.
Has anybody done this?

I do but it's really not recommended. We use a Swagman 2 bike rack, bumper safety Struts and I strap our 2 light bikes diagonally back to the frame to limit the bouncing. It's worked so far but extremely risky [emoji51]. I keep an eye on the bikes via the rear camera. But like I said, risky and not recommended.

Do a search, has been covered many times. Bumper mounting is the very best way to find out how well your bikes will stand up to being dragged down the road. Also note that almost all racks are NOT built for RV use. Swagman, Yakima and a couple of others make a model or two that are, but you have to download and read the manuals for each model to find out which is and which isn't approved.

Wonder if anyone has figured out how to “toad” bikes, both tires down, from rear of trailer. Think of motorhomes toading cars 4-down.

I’m doing the same on our Imagine 17MKE soon but will just use my Thule T2 Classic rack. It’s not “approved” but is built like a tank. We’ll add the bumper braces as a backup. Examining the weld joint and gussets, I’m confident we’ll be fine with two carbon frame bikes, tightly clamped receiver joints, and the 17MKE’s short 70” distance from bumper to rear axle. It’s not much different than our Jeep with its receiver extension to clear the spare tire. Amazon sells die penetrant kits so I might do an annual inspection of the welds, but the braces would prevent a catastrophic failure should fatigue develop between my checks.
That’s not to say it’s a good idea in general. Problems occur with longer trailers, sloppy joints, hanging style racks, heavy bikes, and especially with 4-bike rack rack extensions. I’m accepting a calculated risk based on my engineering assessment, but with a few backup precautions too. For longer trips we’ll still carry bikes inside the tow vehicle for protection from both weather and theft, as we’ve always done even when not towing.Dave and Cathy
