Locked out
Can someone tell me how I locked us out of our rig?
We had to call a locksmith and fortunately had it picked In a few minutes.
But we tried to figure out how it happened but you need the key on the outside. Correct?
No secret lever?
Newbie.

I think its possible to have the handle locked (not the deadbolt) and be able to shut the door without it unlocking. At some point you would have had to lock that lock with a key unless there is an issue with the lock.

Almost impossible to do since you would have to have the door open then lock it with the key then go inside and close the door
Why would anyone do this?
When wanting to be inside with a locked door just use the deadbolt
Unless of course it is defective as suggested

Ours's will unlock enough to open door but lock itself back when you shut it. I Have to make sure I turn lock all the way to unlock and it will not do that. I purchased two spares and keep one in the truck and one hidden outside side that I can get if needed.

It is easier than you think.
I did this to my wife once.
We were deer hunting, and I left the TT before dawn, locking both locks so my wife who was sleeping in that morning would be safe.
The temp was around 15F. The dog woke her wanting to go out to potty. She took it out wearing only shorts, tshirt and flip flops, as she though she would be back inside in a couple of minutes....... That did not work out so well. Tragedy was averted as she was able to use the hide a key for the TV to get warm.
This is just a flat out terrible design. But it is universal in the RV world.
NEVER use both locks when the RV is in use. Only use the dead bolt.

I’d heard of this happening, but couldn’t remember how it happened until I read this. All I know is that we only use the deadbolt when locking the trailer.

I can confirm this phenomenon happens... and it is indeed with the top lock, not the deadbolt.
On move days, it is easy to unlock the top lock and open the door, but then, turn the key back to the locked position (while the door is open) to remove the key and walk inside... once this happens, the door will close and latch like normal but, in the locked position.
It will also open from the inside while still in the locked position and latch again on close... then... you are locked out.
Happens when unlocking the door and unintentionally turning the top key back to the locked position to remove the key, we have gotten in the habit of pulling the exterior door handle after unlocking it to make sure it moves/opens

Simple, just put a piece of tape over the lock you want to keep in the unlocked position.

Very easy to do.
It happens when you remove your keys with the door open. You accidentally re-lock the handle when you remove the key, then you go inside and close the door. The deadbolt operates normally because it is not connected to the handle. When you go outside and close the door (with your keys inside) you are locked out.
This happened to my wife on our last trip, unfortunately, I was an hour away, but she made the best of it and basked in the FL Sunshine while she waited.David and Peggy

If the key comes out while in the locked position you need a new cylinder. It should be in the up/down position when removed . Replace your cylinder before this happens........
I got locked in, Gary locked the door as he left for several hours while I was sleeping. He is gone and we were in a secluded spot so no one to hear me. Had a fairly fresh broken wrist so couldn't use that hand for stability , climbing out a window was not an option. Also with 3 dogs that had not been out in over10 hours ( very rainy night before)
Irate, I called our service writer who had recently said we did not have a problem with the locks, they lubed them with graphite. Insisting on them sending out a locksmith NOW... Somehow they managed to talk me through dismantling the door handle/ lock one handed.. needless to say we dropped the trailer off on the way home..2 new cylinders (also I insisted they gave us a new key number) and new set of keys.Marcy & Gary
