F-450 maxed out payload
I bought the 2021 F-450 for hopefully having more than enough payload to tow my Solitude 385 GK (16,800 GVWR)
I loaded the Solitude to 15,500 w/ 3,760 pin weight.
My GVWR of the Truck is 14,000 and payload is 4635 on door sticker. 4635-3760 = 875 cargo capacity which seems to be not much available cargo capacity if you figure :
400 for people, 120 hitch, 43 for 5 gallon can diesel, tools and misc. 200 with about 100 safety factor.
My 450 is heavily optioned(I didn’t realize how my payload would be reduced so much)
Any suggestions or observations ?
Thank!

Whoa! That's all the payload on a 450 King Ranch!?? That is nearly 1K less than my 3500 Laramie Longhorn...
F450s are de-rated, and that is known. It is not like the 250/2500 vs 350/3500 debate... I personally would not be uncomfortable with the 450 at yellow sticker...Rob & Nikki + Cloverfield

In the case of the F450, Ford puts the 14,000 lb GVWR on it to be able to stay in the Class 3 truck range. That keeps the truck in a classification that doesn't require commercial licenses in a lot of states, as well as keeping people from way higher insurance premiums. So basically, it is a derated truck with higher capabilities than what it shows. Do ask me how much higher though.....I don't know.

Being an F450, I wouldn't worry about it. I know commercially I've seen them registered as 16k trucks. I think at this point it's more of an administration issue than a physical capability the truck. Like mentioned already, it is because Ford likes to keep the F450 in the non-commercial class so it is limited to 14k GVWR.

WOW, that is unfortunate. I would strongly suggest you install the 20k GooseBox instead of a standard 5th Wheel Hitch. This will reduce your weight by at least the weight of the hitch. We really Love the GooseBox and hitch weight was part of the consideration when we bought it (although, I really liked the GooseBox from the first time I saw it).

Good grief! There are people pulling 20,000lb Momentums with F-250's. I would be willing to bet the majority of people towing Solitudes are using F-250's. The F-450 is an outstanding towing platform that can EASILY handle a Solitude 385GK. The F-450 is one of the most de-rated non-commercial trucks out there.
