Found this thread searching for pin weight on 280 RS. My wife and I kicking around the idea of upgrading to a 5th wheel and like the looks of that one. However, I have an F-250 6.2l gas engine and I had concerns about payload first, so wanted to start research as I didn't know if it was possible. In looking at the numbers, if I was to be on the side of caution, I couldn't do it in my current tow vehicle with a payload capacity of 3117 lbs! Figure @ 2400 lbs of pin weight, 400 lbs of passengers (me, wife, and large dog), 200 lb hitch, 200+ lbs of misc items...and I'm over payload! No way I would entertain it in a vehicle with payload of 1933 lbs! Hey, wife isn't against getting a bigger truck either, so we may be getting both down the road!

I think I would double-check that pin weight #. According to Grand Design's website, the hitch weight is listed at 1310. The Reflection 150 series is designed to be "half-ton towable". Although I would not recommend doing it. At any rate, if this were the case, and you still added your factors you have listed you would still be within payload.

All of the factory listed pin weights are for new and EMPTY RV's. No batteries, propane, water, kitchenware, tools, chairs, camping gear...nothing. Most people recommend taking about 22% of the GVWR (10,995lbs) to estimate pin weight which is roughly 2,400lbs. So his pin weight estimate is right on.

The pin weights listed by Grand Design are empty/dry - no propane, no batteries, no fluids, nothing in closets, basements, or other storage areas. Loaded to GVWR, the 280RS will put between 2,100 and 2,300 lbs, on the pin.

Since this thread has multiple members and several sub-topics going, it's a good idea to quote the person to whom you are responding (as I have done here). You can use the "Reply With Quote" next to "Reply" in the light colored bar under the post.
