Looking for camping advice San Juan National Forest

We are considering a trip to the San Juan National Forest in CO. We are looking for recommendations/experience from those of you who have visited there. We love to hike and enjoy beautiful scenery.
Our initial plan is to travel from our home in the Dallas area, with overnight stops in Texas and Santa Fe NM to break the nearly 800 mi trip into manageable segments.

Make reservations NOW. We spent all afternoon yesterday trying to reserve RV parks in southwest Colorado and found that most of them were booked full six weeks out. They all said they were very busy this summer. Good luck getting a place to park your rig.
