    Fifth wheel hitch purchase

We take delivery of our 3550 BH-R Solitude in August. This is our first experience with campers. We would appreciate input on the proper hitch to purchase.

Tell us a bit about your tow vehicle. Long bed? Factory puck system?

I would strongly suggest you look at the Reese GooseBox system. You gain access to your entire Truck Bed when not towing and you are not carrying around a 300 + pound hitch all the time (and/or removing/installing it into/out of the truck).

We really love the Reese GooseBox and can't imagine towing without it !!!!!

PS: Based on your camper weight you will need the 20k (Gen 2) GooseBox.

If you do a search, you'll find dozens and dozens of threads on this topic. Enough posts to keep you busy reading for several days. Your question is similar to asking what truck people prefer.

Having the Factory Puck System is one of the main reasons I started looking at the GooseBox. The Long Bed really works well with the GooseBox.

I have a '18 CCLB Dually with the factory puck system. I went with the B&W 25K Companion. Together, it weighs about 140 lbs. but you can easily separate the 2 pieces to make it manageable for 1 person. Ride wise, it is very nice as well.

Anderson Ultimate Hitch is also a good option if you want easy in, easy out of the bed - it only weighs 40lbs.
Make sure you check the height of your bed and match with the correct model. These run around $1000-1200 depending on model.

If I had a long bed, I would have a Reese Goosebox, or the GenY on my trailer. The Andersen is nice, but having the airbag in the Goosebox, or the flex of the GenY to absorb stuff would be nicer. Both hitches being permanently mounted on the trailer, the only thing you have to worry about is the ball in the truck.

Also, for gooseneck adapters, Lippert (frame maker on your trailer) only "approves" the use of the Reese Goosebox on the trailer. Not the Andersen AUH or others. I personally think it is that Reese is in bed with Lippert, and this is a handshake agreement more then an engineering one, but something you should be aware of.

I really wanted a Goosebox for all the reasons noted above. However it got a little complicated when picking up our new trailer. The dealer would only install the Goosebox if I purchased it from them and then wanted to charge even more for the install. I had to draw the line somewhere on adding more cost to our new unit. That said, I really like our B&W. Super easy to operate and it's not that bad to remove/re-install (which I don't do often).
