Newbie to the RV world and Grand Design

Hello All, We are newbies to the world of RV'ing. Looking at a few but we are really interested in the 21g. I have so many questions and don't know where to begin. I guess start with my tow vehicle.

    2021 Ram 1500 5.7L ,4X4 Quad Cab, 6'5" bed, 1865 payload, 11200 max towing capacity, class 4 receiver.

Not trying to cause a stir but is this vehicle capable to safely haul the 21G. We don't want the generator as I am not ok with the installation location. that should save a little on weight.

We have no toys to haul but I like the open space as well as the ability to have a patio. If we get toys we will upgrade to a Ram 2500. Only things we will haul will be mountain bikes and a Blackstone grill. and possibly a portable generator. Thank you all for you input

Is that payload number from after weighing or is it from the sticker on your door or from a brochure?

That is the payload from the sticker and also the Ram VIN look up site. I will have it weighed in a few days. Gross weight of this truck is 7100lbs.

Expect it to be less after weighing
Anything added to truck like accessories will lower payload.
The TW will be 1100-1200 plus a hitch so do the math with what is left.

My advise is to get the 2500 sooner rather than later. You'll be glad you did and you won't have to worry about a few pounds.

Trade in a 2021 and lose over 15k

I would slow down and weigh it first

If it is within specs send it

I enjoy the truck too much to trade it in. I believe we are gonna look at other grand design TT's. I love the looks of the Transcend line of TT's. Specifically the 231RK Also would like to look at the 2600RB. Issue is it's difficult to find them at the dealerships. So little stock.

I’d rather be a little under weight than over weight, YMMV. With about 1800# of payload, estimate your load (people, pets, what’s in the box like lawn chairs, coolers, BBQs etc...) on the truck and add the weight of the hitch, which could be as low as 60# for an Andersen and as much as 175# for others. Assuming you have a liberal estimate of 765# of stuff the resulting number, is about 1100#. A general rule I use is to carry about 13% of trailer weight on the TV. Some like to use as little as 10%, some like to use as much as 15%. Regardless, in the example here, it should not exceed 1100#. In other words the following list is about right:
1000 of available payload, trailer GVWR is 7692#.
1100 of available payload, trailer GVRW is 8461#.
1200 of available payload, trailer GVWR is 9230#.

All based on the general formula :

GVWR of trailer = (Truck payload to support the trailer tongue weight X 100)/% of GVRW on truck bumper.

Highly unlikely he would love 15K or any money really! The used truck market is not what you would expect, especially for a 1/2 ton! There have been numerous instances where people actually make money trading in their used truck!!! Now finding a new truck might be the challenge :-(

    This never happens. Sorry
Spent my life in auto sales

It may look good on paper but common vehicles never appreciate

When in for my last service they were offering me big bucks to trade
    2018 mint with 45000 kilometres (28000 miles)

I paid 40 k for my truck 3 years ago. Over 10 k off msrp
A new 2500 is 77000 and they are only taking off 1000. That’s is it

    Never going to happen
