    GD Momentum 399TH Truck Selection

Well I'm looking into getting a 399th and I normally like to stay with Ford Trucks. So I'm guessing the only options is F350Dually or F450 Dually. I'm reluctant on jumping to a dually but thinking that is my only option. But yet I see a bunch of people that have a 399th and they are pulling them with a F350 Single and say no sway issues and after some weight moving around no sag issues as well.

My other main problem is I have a family of 7 so also convincing my wife to drive two vehicles now if we do ever to get a bigger truck. My main concern is right now I enjoy our 34' Travel trailer while pulling it with my Ford Expedition. But as the kids get older (right now 14,11,11,8,8) and bigger any helpful talking points I can use to show the benefit into going larger in the future will be needed.

Welcome to the forum. I previously had a 399 and the loaded pin weight was around 4200 lbs, add the weight of the hitch, passengers and whatever else you are in dually territory. Pulling that trailer with a SRW is a terrible idea, even when unloaded it will most likely exceed truck tire and rear axle ratings. I weighed my truck and trailer completely empty, even no propane tanks for a military move, the drive axle on the truck was at 7700lbs, and it was just me in the truck.

Anytime you are going to be towing a trailer as heavy as a 399TH, don't even bother thinking or looking at a SRW truck. Embrace the Dually for stability, enough capacity to tow the trailer safely without overloading any of the rated capacities of the truck, and no white knuckle driving. That trailer has a GVWR of 20,000 lbs if it is fully loaded. I know some folks with different 20K GVWR trailers and some of them are in the 4500 to 4600 lbs of pin weight when loaded up.

yeah have to think either go on a smaller size of trailer then with not being a toy hauler. Don't need it for the weight but the space to house all of our kids.

350DRW or 450. Prefer the 450, commercial tires, tighter turning radius, a little more "built" than a 350DRW (although, to be fair, at 350DRW is more than enough for just about any trailer made, and certainly any trailer made by GD).

Don't shy away from a Ford DRW, especially the F450. I made the jump from a 2017 F350CCSB SRW to a 2019 F450 and love it. It is also my daily driver. Turning radius is better than the F350CCSB and the two and the huge brakes were meant to tow heavy. Ride is similar to the F350... but potholes or washboard surface will remind you it is a dually.
