Question Bayou Segnette State Park LA across from New Orleans - any good?

Looking at spending a few days around New Orleans. Is the Bayou Segnette State Park and OK place. Want to do some fishing and they say 6 miles away is a ferry to the French quarter with parking at the ferry terminal. I think it is the Canal Street/Algiers Ferry.

I also want to try and find the wood grilled oyster bar that Guy on DDD visited, but cant find it on his or the Food Chanel web page. Any other must eat places (seafood)

Last was wanting to take a carriage ride with the DW - not into tours with other folks. There appear to be several outfits. Are any better than others or is thier a specific guide I should try and find.

    Thanks for the help folks

Trip planed for mid to late August this year.

Can only comment on our stay at Bayou Segnette campground. It was a perfect location and very peaceful. Highly recommend.

Glad to hear you are planning a trip to the New Orleans Area. We are live about 10 miles from Bayou Segnette Park. While we never have stayed there, I do have an acquaintance that likes it there.
As for fishing I would recommend goin with a guide service out of the Lafitte area, about a 20 minute drive from the park. Fishing while good in the area you would be better served by a guide. We gave up fishing about a year ago because our boat was too small to get to the better fishing areas. August is a tuff month for fishing so having to go farther out is a must to do good, ie larger boat.
Locally in the park area there is freshwater type fishing that is reasonably good but also need a power boat, close to the park they will be small perch, bream and some largemouth bass and catfish if you work at it.

As far as the oysters the original restaurant would be Drago's, there is one close to the ferry you spoke of, and the other in Metairie. There are a lots of restaurants that offer as good charbroiled oysters. Personally, I prefer raw ones but more in the winter time.

While in New Orleans stay safe and park in well lite and occupied parking lots and I be carefully exploring away from the major areas especially at night. Unfortunately we still have crime to worry about. Day time excursion tend to be better so plan well.

Use precautions parking and using the ferry, personally I would drive and park in the areas you plan on sight seeing. When we go downtown we take these types of precautions but we typically are goin to restaurants and or casino.

The city is opening up and a lot of the music venues and festivals are starting to put their schedules together so that will impact a lot on the areas.

We are great place to come and visit and have fun but stay safe, we do.

We just stayed their last month right after a tropical storm went through there so things were pretty wet. The location is great for easy access to downtown. The maintenance seemed a little behind but i'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt with the storm that they were running behind. If you are a long rig, watch the approach ramp at the entrance gate, we just barely missed dragging our leveling legs at the crest over of the elevated platform. Just be aware.

Thanks so much - we have reservations. Thanks for the entrance tip. Is the park well marked as to the entrance?

If I may ask did you drive into town and if so where did you park? Did you use the ferry (recommended by the park)

Any recommendations on what to see or eat. I do want to take the DW on a carriage ride - any suggestions?

    Thanks again

The entrance is pretty easy to find, no big deal there in the daytime. They have a weird after hours gate for you to use but its no big deal, they give you the directions at check-in if you go out at night.

We drove into town and didnt think parking was too tough. Their is plenty of pay lots by the water front if you go down to the market area. Overall didnt think parking was a big deal and i have a 3500 truck.,

We did Cafe du Monde, have to do taht and if you can get reservations, Commander's Palace is excellent. If you like a good muffaletta the Central Grocery down by the French Quarter.

    Have a good time

A couple restaurants and places to visit.
    Restaurants
Good New Orleans poor boy, Mothers on Canal st. About 2 blocks from Cesaer Casino on Canal St.
MANDINA'S. on Canal St. About a mile also down Canal St. Fair amount of parking, Italian cuisine.
Don Seafood in Metaire on Vetrans Blvd. Lots of local flavors, plus their charbroiled oyster are good., also Acme Oyster house is highly rated but I've not personally been there.

As far as tours in the French Quarter goes there are walking tours that are rated pretty good and cater to smaller g
Groups, can be found around Jackson Square,
Audubon Zoo is also excellent plan on a major part of A day there,
MAGAZINE ST. Has several local and unique shops to go to plus assortment of restaurants.
A plantation visit is also nice if you never seen one, again that could involve a days activity depending which one and figuring out which are open.
There are river cruises available too, downtown at the river walk.
Hopefully some of these might fit your interest and schedule.
    Have fun and stay safe.
