    The ends of the poles have a nail sticking out so I drilled a 5/8th hole about an inch and half then used a drill bit the size of the nail to further drill the hole another 2. The pole slid right in and is very tight and secure

    I would still get nervous with winds over 20 mph.

    On that note, we use those NRS heavy duty straps on our rooftop kayaks when traveling with our truck camper. Best strap out there IMO.
