    2-2-2

I was reading an article about electric trucks and towing. In the article it mentioned that there is a general rule/guideline for RV'ing called 2-2-2.

*Take a break after 2 hours of driving
    *Drive 200 miles a day
    *Take a 2 nights rest

Anyone heard of this guideline? I can see the break every 2 hours, but only driving 200 miles a day and stopping for 2 nights seems a little much to me. Could take you awhile to get to your destination. Unless you are in no hurry???

I'm 66 and my wife is 68 and she helps me drive on long trips. Later on this year we will be doing over 5000 miles plus another probably 1500 travelling between National Parks out west. We will be averaging approx. 400 mile days for travel out and back. Taking a break every couple hundred miles sounds reasonable, but I do have enough fuel onboard to go right at 700 miles before stopping for fuel....so the breaks will be when one of us or the dog needs a bathroom break or to eat. The only time we will stop more than a night while travelling is when we are actually at whatever National Park we are visiting. Of course, this doesn't work for everyone....some actually drive more in a day...and some drive less. So, my advice or opinion is to just drive/travel however long you are comfortable with and then plan accordingly for travel times and stays.

Same here...we normally drive 300-400 miles. Start looking for a place for the night around 3-4pm. Break 1.5-2 hours.

Never heard of 2-2-2 but I can see how maybe in the electric vehicle world it would be the thing to do by necessity.

Might even be a gimmick someone is pushing to make the range for electric vehicles sound more practical. (cynical side showing through)

Yes, the article was saying that the 200 mile range while towing would work with 2-2-2.

I can honestly say, I can never see myself buying an electric vehicle of any sort/kind..........the exception might be an electric wheelchair if/when I get to the point I need one.

200 miles a day is probably all an electric tow vehicle could muster. Depending on your power source it may take 2 nights to recharge. I think practical electric tow vehicles or RVs are a ways off. I think their best opportunity will be in driveables. For a tow vehicle, in order to get the range folks want or need you would have to add battery capacity which would eat up payload and towing capacity. I'm thinking advances in battery technology will be necessary to provide a truly useful electric tow vehicle.

I have heard of the 3-3-3 rule. which I think is 300 miles, break every 3 hours, and in by 3:00 PM. Our rule is no more than 5 hours, in by 3:00, break/gas every 2 hours. We broke the 5 hour rule yesterday and traveled 7 hours.

So . . . rules are made to be broken, when necessary, unless you have an electric tow vehicle and don't want to be stranded on the side of the road.

2-2-2 is an old Full-timers guideline where it's the journey that counts and not the destination. I guess somebody started using it to push electric vehicles...not for me either.

Never heard of 2-2-2. It is the rule of 3s that's the norm I've heard for decades from the full-timers (and also subscribe too as much as possible these days) - take a break every 3 hours, travel 300 miles a day, and be off the road by 3pm.

Same here. As full-timers, we try to keep it under 200 miles a day (yesterday was about 140 miles). On cross-country trips, every third stop we stay two nights to have a day of rest and to catch up on laundry or shopping if we need to. At our age, we're lucky if our bladders last two hours, though - especially after our morning coffee.

There's not an electric vehicle available to consumers at this point that would pull our fifth wheel or be logistically feasible from a charging standpoint. Since we're getting older, it looks like it will be diesel until we have to come off the road.
