    Serious Ford Recall Coming

If you are a lucky person who bought a Super Duty F350 between Aug 2020 & May 2021 you are not going to like this. Some engineer reduced the axel tube size on the Dana 275M ton axel. The axel housing starts collapsing & deforming at the spring mount welds. I have even seen some pictures where the axel grease is coming out. Your truck will be inspected at the dealership. If the axel housing is not distorted they put a weld across the front & back of spring mount housing on the axel. Bubblegum repair at its finest. They stopped receiving this axel on 5-15, but I think that they are using the remaining stock & the weld is being done at the factory. I know because my new truck was built a week after this date & the spring block is welded all the way around at the factory. So I have a feeling that it is one of the weak axel housings. I will find this out next week as the Ford dealer is going to install a anti-sway bar on the rear end. The recall started at 26,000 or so vehicles. I see now its up to 35,000 vehicles. Guess what? They don't have 35,000 rear end housings available at this time. So, if you are lucky they pull your rear end out & you get a spot weld. If the tubes are deformed you park it until the parts are available. Notices will be coming out in the mail soon according to Ford. For the record this is a Dana axel.
At this time they are not recalling F350's with the Godzilla V8. Saying that it does not deliver enough torque to effect the weak axel tubes. Bull, sooner or later, they will experience the same thing.
Also, you can look at your vehicle & if there is a lot of paint flaking off the around the spring mounts on the housing on the differential out to the tire it is a sign of torque flexing. The axel is moving & the paint is flexing away. A very tell tail sign. I'm seeing this on mine already at 1400 miles. Time will tell,
    Have a good day.

Here is a link to the ford recall site.

Manufacture date not purchase date. The following is from the Ford site.

“ Safety recall for certain 2020-2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty vehicles with 6.7-liter engine and single rear wheel axle for a rear axle housing spring seat interface weld issue”…..

“This action affects 34,855 vehicles in North America, with the remaining balance in Ford’s International Markets Group. Vehicles were built at Kentucky Truck Plant between Aug. 6, 2020 and May 15, 2021. ”

So, the defect was shrinking axle tube and the fix is welding... and, for future manufacturing...did they redesign back to reasonable size? The whole point of superduty is supposed to be reduced wear and tear due to oversized parts...

I got the notice on Ford Pass and called the dealer. They said Ford does NOT have a resolution in place yet. They said it was a pre-recall notice. My 2020 F350 was built 9/20.

    Russ Olin,

Would you have a picture of your axle where it’s welded all the way around? My truck is at my vacation cabin so I won’t be able to check mine fir another week when I get back there.
