    Axle Spindle Question

This is a repost of my reply to my thread on bearing size it's kind of a subject change.

OK, so I got all the parts, tools and got into the crispy bearing today.
Outer bearing was toast, Inner bearing looked to be pretty good actually.
Pulled the bearings and races off the axle and out of the drum.
Attached are pix of the axle spindle.
Not sure if I can just clean up the scratches with emory cloth and install the new bearings or if the axle needs to be replaced.

Oh man. I hate to say this but that crack looks pretty bad. If you are any where close to the warranty period I’d ask GD and dexter for help.

Hard to tell how deep it is from a picture. If any of the damage is on a surface where a seal rides, it's likely toast. If not, it might be okay assuming bearings fit snugly.

In the second picture there’s a crack line where the outer bearing rides on the spindle.

Back in 2006, I was doing a routine repack job, and one of my spindles did not pass my inspection (though it did not as bad as yours) I removed the axle and took it to trailer axle shop here in Phoenix and asked what could be done. The person there said they could cut the spindle off and weld on another one, for 95.00. I left it with him to do the job. A few days later, I went to pick it up. I paid inside while a worker loaded it in my truck. After paying I took a look at it before leaving. They had welded on an old junk spindle that was in worse shape than the original. I went back inside and told the owner so. He came out and looked at it, stating that it was fine. I disagreed, telling that I did not pay him to end up with a worse situation than I aready had. He started swearing, pickep the axle and hurled it like a javalin across the yard say he would would refund my money and weld my original spidle back on. I got my refund and left. I then called auto safety house and asked about getting a new axle. It had to ordered as it was an unusual size,,,, but it was only 115.00 for the bare axle!. A few days later Arizona axles called me to let me know that my axle was ready for pickup. I asked if my spindle was all weded back on real nice. He replied that it was. I then told him where he could put it, as I had a new axle on the way for 115.00, and I was done with him.

OP, yes I would replace it. It will be cheaper than you probably thought, and the job isn't all that bad.

Yes, axles are cheap. I’ll take it a step further and say you can buy completely assembled axles with new brakes for a decently low price. It might be worth price checking. Then the job is 8 u bolt nuts and one wire splice.

"Outer bearing"? What outer bearing are you referring to? Yeah, I still don't see any crack. But my eyes aren't the best.

    Not really that cheap.
