The pictures clearly show wear and scuffing on the two little pistons and on the cylinder wall of the pump. I'm no expert on this stuff, but that kind of wear isn't normal IMO and I believe I was on the way to an expensive failure. The truck has 105,000 on the clock.
Pics say it all. Did they replace anything up stream of the CP4? The missing metal had to go somewhere. You made the right choice. I am sincerely grateful that FCA is recalling 2019-2020 Cummins with the CP4 (actually I'm more astonished than grateful) for exactly the concerns you expressed. 310 is due off assembly in 3 days and 2 trips to Dakotas, one to NC, and one to NM on the list for next year. That darn thing would have bothered me the entire time.

Fortunately I caught this in time. There were no metal shavings anywhere in the pump, just the scuffing in the pictures. Seems to me that the scuffing would have led to more wear and eventually shearing which (I think) would have started to break down the metal of the pistons and/or walls of the pump. I don't have the in depth knowledge on this but IMO the scuffing or scoring of the pistons is the start of something worse.

You are very fortunate that your Ram is being recalled and that they accept responsibility. Astonishment is a good word!! Safe travels on your trips next year. PM me if you need any campground recommendations in NC. Highly recommend the Asheville and surrounding area.

Will do as we plan on spending a lot of time in NC (daughter and husband in Southern Pines area). Let us know how the CP3 works out.

I really didn't expect it to drive differently, but knowing I may have dodged a significant breakdown, brings tremendous peace of mind. IMO it wasn't a matter of if - but when. I think the pictures support that.
You certainly got this just in time. If you look at the top of one of the pistons it is burnt pretty crispy from scuffing. Failure would have been sooner rather than later. Glad you got to this in time. Enjoy!

Lubrication plays a very small part in whether the pump lives or dies, and does nothing to prevent the piston from rotating. If it rotates, it dies, no matter how well it is lubricated
If that's the case how come we see very few failures since the latest CP4 was introduced in the 2020 Ford?

And to the OP, did you ever get a new truck?

I have a 2020 F350 it gets 1 mpg better than my previous '16 F350 did. Has tons of power and shifts good. It does drink lots of DEF compared to my '16
