I have 2018 Ford F150 2.7 L Eco boost towing Imagine 2400. Tows ok on flat roads but I wonder about performance in mountainous regions.

When we bought our 2.7EB we weren't planning on buying a tt then. So this trucks towing capacity is not the highest. We have a 22mle and I wouldn't want to go any bigger. We are currently on a trip which had some pretty impressive long and steep grades when we pass Quebec QC to the La Malbaie QC region. Going down is the worse part. Some were white knuckle. Even had a 50 km/hr cross wind. It wasn't a pleasant drive. As soon as I can, I'll be upgrading this truck. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it. We are just to close to its capacity.

I think all manufacturers rate their truck towing capacity based on the SAE J-2807 standard. As long as you're not overloaded it won't be ideal but it'll work.
The 2.7 shouldn't lose power as you gain altitude since it's turbocharged.

We bought a 2017 F150 Lariet 3.5 Ecoboost new in June of that year. Great truck to drive around. Then we bought a 2400BH in September. Plenty of power, worked fine with equalizer bars on the 2 lane roads. After 3 hours of interstate driving, that was enough. Just not enough truck for me to feel safe at a speed any faster than 57 mph. Every time a semi blew by us at 70+ mph, the whole felt like it was floating. By November we had the F350. Also, that small engine will be in boost all the time in the mountains. The cooling system may have problems keeping up in that situation. There is a video by TFL truck about that. I agree, I would not be comfortable going down a mountain grade with your combo.

I have a year old F150 with the 2.7 engine. The thing's simply a rocket, and it doesn't even breathe hard towing my 4500 lb. boat.

But I don't like driving fast when going over bridges and railroad tracks. Fords are terribly undershocked. And part of the feel may be because the aluminum truck is very light.

I still have a F250 diesel with airbags and heavy springs for towing--when needed. It may drive like a log wagon, but it takes a bump well when fully loaded.

I tow with a 2019 V6 3.5 EB with a BlueOx SwayPro WDH. TT is 7400 dry. The truck does great in the TN mountains. The 10 speed trans and the BlueOX make all the difference. But western mountains? Maybe not.

My concern would be the rads. I’ve towed a 2950RL with an f150 without max tow up into Yellowstone. I was passing people until the engine got warm. I had a tow package so the transmission stayed cool. That would be my concern. Can’t get a super duty without selling organs so I now have a 3.5 eco boost 6.5 box and the max tow package. It’s a much better experience all around. Still wish I had more truck.
