We have a Ram 2500. Cummings and pulling a 303 with absolutely no problems, even going true the Grand Tetons pass. Way more power than needed

Power isn’t the issue it is payload capacity
    Most are over their gvwr

I find it funny that this is acceptable for HD trucks but a 1/2 ton should only be at 80 percent capacity

    Thanks again.
I don't know Ram well, but in a Ford, trading in a 250 for a 350 single rear wheel model (assuming the same model year) buys you about nothing. They are almost identical in every way that matters for towing, a 250 with a set of airbags will be better than a 350SRW in every way but one, the sticker won't have a higher number on it.

If you're talking about going from a SRW to a DRW, well, yeah, then you're definitely going to notice and yes, it's quite different towing with a dually compared to a single (in a good way, it's more stable, more controlled, more redundancy, etc). But trading from a SRW to a SRW, unless you're really hung up on the sticker (or you're going up a lot of model years, a 2005 250 SRW and a 2021 350 SRW are very different in their capabilities), there's not much you're buying yourself. I'd be shocked if you could even tell the difference when towing (noticing it's and better).

Pre 2018 Dodges were like that as well. But in 2018 and up, the 2500's have a coil suspension rear while the 3500's still have the leaf rear. Just FYI. Is one type better than the other for towing? I dunno.

Hey Gabby, what airbags did you install on your Ram?

There are certain trucks, the 250 and 450 are great examples, that might have a 20K rear axle rating and a combined rear tire capacity of 16K that have a GVWR of 14K. My 450 is one such truck, as most (maybe all) of them are, they are rated to meet the "class", not by the hardware of the truck. The 250 (my previous truck) is another great example of this, the tires were good for 3750 each, the axle a lot more than the tires, and yet the GVWR was not at all 3750X4, because, at least at the time, the 250 was class limited to 9,990 GVWR. Had almost nothing to do with the axle/tires/etc, it's simply the highest rating you can have and be in the class.

In reality, a 250 and 350 SRW and often effectively the same truck with a different badge and a different sticker on the door panel. A 250 SRW with airbags, I'd take that over a 350 SRW without airbags every time and twice on Sunday.

You can absolutely make a 250 SRW a better pulling machine and more capable than a 350 SRW. You still won't be legal, but they are close enough (basically twins) out of the factory that it's simple to make a 250 "better" than a 350 for carrying weight/pulling. Unless you add another set of tires in the back, you'll never get them to be as good as the 350DRW or 450 though; the real weak point in most of these vehicles is the tires.
Hey Overtaxed, I want to put airbags on mine, what airbags are recommended for the Ram 2500?
    Thanks

I have Airlift 5000's on my 450. You'll have to see if they can fit your truck as well, but they are pretty universal, just different mounting brackets between trucks. Relatively easy install if you have a good set of tools and a place to work under the truck comfortably (IE, not a mud puddle).

Lol......my wife is laughing at me that next.....i will want a 3500. I told her that the 3/4 ton is quite capable and i won't be trading up in puller.

    Thanks
We do exactly that: pull our 303 with our 2020 Ram 2500. Have completed 11 trips and it’s easily pulled the camper, no problem. Great stopping, excellent acceleration, handles nicely, almost no chucking and it sits perfectly.

    Have fun!
