    Low Point Water Drain Plugs

Has anyone replaced the screw in plugs on the low point water drains with a ball valve or something similar? This truly are a pain. If so, would you please share what you used? Thanks.

I've seen a lot of members use the Sharkbite ball valve with good success.

I believe the threads on the male end crimped to the PEX are still 1/2" NPT. You can get the most inexpensive PVC/CPVC ball valve with 1/2" threads and use it as well and buy some lunch with the money saved over Sharkbites.

I like the way you think. Thanks.

I picked up a couple of ball valves at Home Depot. They weren’t expensive. I just cut off the PEX that was hanging down, just above the original screw-in plugs. I used a PEX crimp fitting to attach the new valves to both the hot and cold lines. I had picked up all of the fittings and tools so as to have them on hand, if needed. I decided that a test-run, in my driveway, would be good experience in case I needed to work on something on the road.

It all paid off, as I had a leaking line behind the shower while we were at Devil’s Tower. That’s probably 75 miles from the closest location where I could have found repair parts. Having the parts and tools on hand, and the experience of doing it all once while I wasn’t under any pressure to get it done, was the right choice for me.

I ordered these off Amazon and installed them with a little teflon tape. They even came in a handy plastic container that I keep the extra one and some hose washers in!

I used these PVC valves. I did have to get nipples to attach them with but they have been working well so far.
I have since removed the plugs. Didn't really need them. I kept them in the tool box just in case the valves started to leak but that has not been as issue.
The puddle below is just from me messing with them.
