    Hot water heater drain cap

Hooked water hose to TT today. Water dripping from the hot water heater drain cap. The cap is plastic. Tried plumbers tape. Helped but still small
Drip. Anybody replace this plastic with something metal?

Plug may be crossed or damaged (it’s a plug not a cap), replace it

Are you sure you are tightening it enough?

I wonder if buying new plastic caps would be better because there wouldn't be an corrosion/fusing issues? A metal cap probably wouldn't be in place long enough to fuse but is that why they use plastic on all these water heaters?

Do you have an anode rod. If not do not use a metal plug as your water heater tank is aluminum and a metal plug will cause damage. Those plastic plugs will crack and leak on occasion. We carry a few plugs with us and teflon tape for when needed.

Oh yes, I recall that the Dometics are aluminum. Thanks for making that point. I'm going to get a extra cap or two for the time when I will need one myself.

Here's what I did on my water heater. Never have to worry about the plug again. The hose is a high pressure braided hose I got from McMaster Carr and the ball valve and brass barbed fitting and hose clamps I got from Home Depot.

Like this. Did the hose have the fittings or did you have to put them on the hose?

I just bought like 5 feet of hose from McMaster Carr. The two barbed fittings and ball valve came from Home Depot.

FYI - I first tried some braid reinforced hose from HD but when the water heater got hot it started to balloon up a bit. I didn't like that so I found some higher pressure/temperature rated hose on McMaster. If you're interested I can get you the part number when I get home later today.
