Ads in the right side bar

I wanted to give you a heads up about an upcoming change to the site. In the coming day or so ads will be displayed in the right side column along with the recent threads list and other resources. For guests, ads will also display in discussion threads and the site footer. Registering and logging in will make those ads disappear so this is a good incentive to get lurkers to register and participate. Those logged in (who are not sponsors) should still see ads in the right side bar but not in other locations.

Site sponsors will see no ads.

Typically these are not invasive for members as they don't disrupt viewing over in the right sidebar but for those who don't bother to login they will be surprised at ads in threads.

Ads help offset the cost of keeping the lights on for the board (server costs, hosting, software, etc) and they encourage folks to register so while no one is especially thrilled, it's a necessary evil. We try to balance this by shifting the bulk of that burden to those who view without registering and posting.

Ads are served by media companies and google and everyone sees different content. They are based on your browsing preferences, geo location and even keywords on the page. We each see different ads. If you've been looking at RV parts recently you may see ads from RV suppliers, if you've been shopping for shoes or winter coats you may see ads from REI. If you're reading a long thread about tires, you might see ads from a tire seller, etc.

Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding and post up if you see something amiss.

In addition to sharing the knowledge, no adds is Just another reason why this site is worth becoming a site sponsor

With the wealth of information here, it is well worth the very reasonable cost to become a Site Sponsor.

Seems like the right side column has gotten bigger. Means the thread titles on the left side of page have bigger gaps between them.

Maybe the column (in the left area) that indicates where the thread is posted has been enlarged to show the whole title and it's caused this?

Agreed. The right side now takes up nearly half of the page. I never pay any attention to anything that is over there, and it is annoying that the page view has gotten so long. Seems like you have to scroll forever just to reach the bottom of the posts.

Even my signature block has doubled in length, as the lines of text have become so narrow. I really preferred the “old view”.

The side bar is slightly wider - just a few pixels. It should not take up half the screen. What device are you viewing with?

I always use an iPad table. Here is a screen shot.

When I first joined the forum, a couple of years ago, the page was wide enough that my signature only needed a single line for each line of text. Now they all wrap and take up double the vertical space.

Is your tablet in landscape orientation?

You might note that the right side takes up about as much real estate as the area that we read. Then you have the area to the left, where all of the poster-pertinent info is found.

It is in “landscape”. That’s how I have always used it, as I have a keyboard stand/cover.
