Which low profile box do you have?

Does it include an aux fuel tank?

Which bed cover do you have?

    Thanks!

Don't know what the brand on the tool box is - we ordered it from Lowe's.

No aux fuel tank, just a big metal box for putting stuff in.

My husband bought a generic bed cover (off Amazon he thinks). It's a big plastic/vinyl cover with snaps. It snaps onto repositionable snaps on a track that he mounted on the edge/tail gate of the truck.

Definitely get yourself the biggest toolbox you can find that sits below the side rails... with an 8' bed you'll still have plenty of room to put other stuff. Mine is about as big as I could get and it fits with just about 1" clearance on each side of the truck. You can't tell from this picture but there is still room for gas cans, milk crates , 5 gallon water jug, etc.. between the toolbox and the front mounting rail of the hitch.

I like this one that has an optional ladder, or two.

But it's a bit on the high side price wise. It would allow access even with RV hooked up.

I don't have a box yet. That's why I'm asking. I don't want to buy one that I find out later I would hit with the fifth wheel on a sharp turn. Hell, I don't even know what kind of hitch to buy. This all new to me. I wasn't thinking about a bed cover, but it seems like everyone here has one. My bed is coated with that black abrasive material.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time someone had mentioned an auxiliary fuel tank. Are they that important?

You could easily hit the underside of the front end of your rig on a toolbox that sits a few inches above the side rails. Think about backing into a tight spot that's slightly uphill from a narrow roadway... you might just end up being the talk of the campground.
That makes sense, but others say with a long bed I shouldn't have to worry. Did you encounter those problems with a long bed.

I have a short bed now so the Ford tank is only 34 gallons. At best only about 29 gallons can be drawn. Figuring that I want a buffer when towing you might only use 3/4 of a tank before filling up. That means you get to go 21 gallons worth of miles before having to fill up.

I have a 33 gallon aux tank. So now I have about 55 gallons worth of miles before I fill up. That means I get to choose when and where I stop. So, in a short bed, an AUX tank is a good thing to have; at least for me.

The long bed has a 48 gallon tank. I suppose you can get maybe 36 gallons worth of miles from that; maybe a bit more; but that means no reserve. So maybe you can go 30 gallons worth of miles before trying to find a fuel station. On a long day of travel that may mean having to find a suitable fuel station on the way to a location.

It really depends on you travels and travel locations. I find that I like to have plenty of reserve so I can shop for a good location and a good price. And if I can't fill at a truck stop then I like to get to a campground, disconnect, and find a local fuel station with a good price.

It is really nice to drive all day without having to stop for fuel. We stop enough as it is, but not having to stop to fuel while in route is really nice. And we tend to stay in one place for a few days so we usually still have fuel to sightsee with before filling the night before leaving for the next stop.

We were new to towing a 5er awhile back, had to research and learn all the ins and outs, just like you are going through.
Hitch- Lots of different opinions here and personal preference. In the beginning our RV had the standard Lippert pin box and our Ram has the puck system. As luck or my good research would have it, I found a used 1 year old companion hitch that fits the Ram bed pucks for half of what they sell for new. $500 instead of $1000. And it was the right weight rating that could easily handle any 5er we had on our list. That made our hitch decision for us. Initial towing we had some chucking and the MORryde pin box dampens that so since I had good luck finding a good used hitch I looked for a good used MORryde pin box. Low and behold I found one on Craig's List I guy was selling from his Jayco, fit the Solitude perfectly and again for half the cost of a new one. Hitch problem solved.

Now on to your other questions, concerns. Bed coverings - our bed is coated as well but there are things we keep in the bed when not towing that we want to keep dry, or from blowing out of the bed going down the road, some people like to cover their bed when not towing, others don't care. We carry an extra 20# LP tank for our campfire bowl and to use in emergencies to connect to the RV to keep the furnace running, (dont' ask - freak Texas winter storm) and our generator with cable locked to the bed is also in the truck bed. We use the cover to keep these things out of sight and to keep the sun and heat off anything we have in the bed not towing. Thats just our preference.

Aux fuel tank - that is a decision for the individual owners and how they like to travel. Our Ram has an OEM 32 gallon fuel tank, that's comparative small. I also wanted a bed tool box. I looked at the fuel tank tool box combos and for me I didn't like them, too small of a tool box in exchange for the added tank. Then to we did research replacing the OEM fuel tank for a bigger one. Both options were way over $1000 for a good transfer flow aux diesel tank or replacing the OEM tank. The wife and I decided that for our typical travel towing, we like to stop often, so fueling up gives us that chance. We can go 250-275 miles with still a good reserve left in the tank. Once and only once did we push it and go a little over 300 miles before refueling. Now traveling this way, filling up often we don't have the option of selecting lower cost diesel along our route. Right now that could be a concern since diesel is getting in the high price category. This can also get you across states with high fuel taxes. There is no correct answer here, its just how each individual owner likes to travel.

With our bed tool box there is still plenty of room between the tool box and hitch for the aux 20# propane tank and generator or we just keep the generator at the end of the bed so its easier to get out. I'm 66 years old and when unhitched I can use the rear step bumper to get up in the bed if i need to get something out of the tool box. Or when hitched, if needs be I have a two step platform from Harbor Freight that i use to access the tool box from either side. The platform also allows this short guy to hitch up and lock the latch into the hitch.

For your particular concern about a bed tool box, maybe you can hold off until after you purchase your rig and hitch, then see how much room you have and by then maybe have a better handle on what you need, what can fit, and how you would like to travel.

First, I appreciate the many responses trying to help me with my question/dilemma, and they came so quickly.
Secondly, however I need to apologize to all. I did not realize that this site and these boards are for people who own Grand Design RV's. I don't own one more ever have. I've never owned an RV, so no chance to say I've owned any make/model.
I think my excitement made me blind to the obvious. I had always planned on buying a fifth wheel, seeing the national parks, gold prospecting (is just a hobby too get me and the dog out in nature), and see the best of our country.
My excitement came from the fact that the time was here, much sooner than I had thought. I retired when I was 54 - I had a very lucrative career - to move to Jacksonville to be my mother's caretaker. She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2014, fortunately she was a 1%'er. Ninety nine percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are usually given a 'short' window. One percent with neuroendocrine tumors have no timeframe. Although it was inoperable, neuroendocrine tumors are not aggressive and I was able to retire and move into her house in 2016 - I didn't own a home at the time because I was a 100% traveling IT consultant and had sold my last home in 2005 when a long term relationship ended - and as an only child I was the only one to take care of her. The great thing was that due to the non-aggressive nature we've had six years too get to know each other as adults, and often even forgot she had cancer. In February of this year things changed, but not in the way we expected. She suddenly went into end stage renal failure (stage 5) and the past seven months have been a roller coaster from hell because she began some sort of systemic physical breakdown (the things that have gone wrong are to numerous to list here) and in a few weeks she'll be having her right kidney removed. Her chances of recovery are both the greatest, but she tripped me she would love to get a chance to travel with me in a fifth wheel. Therefore, I've been on a tear too get setup and be able too hot there road ASAP,

Thanks again for the advice - although I still don't know if I can get a tool box that kiss NOT low profile with my long bed, but I did get a truck that will pull anything I buy. Maybe it we'll be a Grand Design. Until then, I shouldn't be using this forum since I don't own one. It isn't fair.
