Reflection 28bh Fifth Wheel Furnace Questions

Hello! Thanks for reading. We have had trailers for 10 years, but are new to fifth wheels this year. Our 28bh is set up like most bunkhouses, with the bunkroom at the back and the master front. We have a huge 2"x10" heat duct in our bedroom, and then the long run to the bunkroom with only a 4" line. Needless to say, with the heat set to 68, it is 68 in the stairwell where the thermostat is, 82 in our bedroom, and 60 or so in the bunkroom. We found that by covering our bedroom vent, and setting the thermostat high, we can force more air into the bunkroom, but it uses a ton of propane. I have also read that it's not a great idea to block rv heat vents? The heat that our furnace produces is incredible....I first bought a standard residential heat register with metal top and plastic part that closes off the register, and the entire plastic part melted into a twisted mess. It didn't become liquid, but boy it is twisted now! SO....any thoughts on how to better distribute the heat around the trailer? With many thanks for advice!

I’m following this thread. We got our new 2021 28BH in October of 2020. Getting the temperature up to an acceptable level has been problematic in the bunk room as well. We ran the heat, our first fall, to the point that the sliding door above the vent in the front bedroom has delaminated at the bottom. Grand Design is sending a new door. The service department thinks it’s because the door was faulty. I suspect otherwise.

that's what I;m talking about - the furnace is insanely hot, but distribution is awful. hoping someone on here has some advice. to block off the bedroom vent we installed a metal register cover and put magnetic sheets over it for now, but I am not sure if this is a good idea. Hoping for more input! Cheers!

I have a 2018 28BH and have the same disappointment regarding heat flow to the bunkhouse. I thought maybe I had a duct that came off because there is low to no flow. Nothing appeared to be separated or pinched off. I then chose to pull down my underbelly Coroplast. The duct runs from the furnace on the left to the right of the trailer then runs all the way to the rear and then crosses back to the left and routes forward to the duct. It's a very long run. I've lived with the poor performance thus far but was wondering if I could wire an outlet back there and run an inline fan to suck more heat back there. Considered using a smart plug and controlling it with my phone. It was just a thought I had. No real idea if that would work or not. A relative suggested pulling back the wall to access the furnace and block off a duct that pours too much heat to the bathroom or bedroom. Again haven't tried looking but would like to solve this problem too.

In our previous rig we had vents in the floor, we used metal vents that were able to be closed or redirected.
We picked them up at Home Depot. It help distribute the heat evenly throughout the rig. I never saw any
    issues with doing this.

Thank you! interesting idea to use an inline fan....I like it. There is already power there from the outdoor kitchen. By the way, check out my outdoor kitchen mod in the mods tab!
Interesting that it is the same problem from 2018 to 2021.

Short of re arranging the vents off the furnace which involves dropping the coroplast not sure what can be done.

Hotter in the bedroom is very common in GD 5th wheels

    Jeffrey,

If you haven't already, I would start by removing the thin rear wall in the basement and checking the back of the furnace to make sure all ducts are firmly connected to their plenum outlets. It's quite common for one or more to fall off causing uneven distribution of heated air. On our previous Reflection fifth wheel, I also found the heat duct going toward the back to the kitchen island had been mashed flat between the Coroplast and a frame cross-member (should have been on top of the cross-member, not under). Of course, I didn't find this until I cut a flap in the Coroplast to see why the kitchen water lines were freezing.

Thank you! I have checked the furnace outlets and all appear on tight. What a mess it is under there!!! After reading posts on here, as soon as I got the trailer I opened that wall and vaccuumed in there and then sealed and holes leading to the underbelly with spray foam. Now I will have to drop the coroplast in the spring to get a peak. It's getting a bit cold here in Ontario to play with that now!
