    2022 Ram 2500 towing a 5er?

    Hey folks,

New to the form and soon to be new owner of a 2022 Reflection 341RDS however I'm having second thoughts on my tow setup....

My tow vehicle (that is currently on order) is going to be a 2022 Ram 2500 with a 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 gears which gives me a payload of 2,990 lbs and towing capacity of 16,810 lbs

Meanwhile, the 341RDS has a hitch weight of 2,042 lbs and a GVWR of 13,995 lbs

At first look, I'm fine because I have 948 lbs for truck's occupants/gear (family and dog is around 650) but from what I'm reading on this forum is that the pin weight is actually closer to 20-23% of the GVWR which would be right around maxing out my payload.....

Likelyhood of someone having this same setup is rare I'm sure but for comparison purposes, does anyone have similar numbers for payload, towing capacity, and trailer GVWR that could comment on this?

    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

Generally speaking, it's best to figure your actual hitch weight at about 20% of GVWR, which in this case would be 2,800 lbs. You may not hit that weight, but I could almost guarantee that your actual hitch weight will be higher than 2,042 lbs., since that weight is based on UVW, which is figured before adding things like batteries, propane, and optional equipment. And of course traveling supplies and such. It adds up pretty quickly. IMO 2,500 lbs. would be a pretty realistic number.

Remember that brochure payload on the truck, and the actual can be very different. Brochure weight is the most basic truck with nothing added (to look good), and you will be looking at least several hundred pounds+ less payload, even with minimum stuff on the truck. A 3500 SRW, which is the same size, a little stiffer due to leaf springs from the coil springs, would carry what ever load you have with that trailer.

If you use 23% of GVWR, that would put the pin weight at over 3,000 lbs. (our Reflection 337 put exactly 3,000 lbs. on the pin per the CAT scales). With occupants, hitch, etc., you'll be over the payload on the truck. The important things, though, are the rear axle and tire ratings on the truck - those are the red line not to be crossed.

It's nearly a certainty you did not order a base level truck. Every option deducts from available payload. Simple advice is to order a more capable truck...

Can they give you the actual payload rating for YOUR truck, as ordered?

Published average weights are not what you will actually get.

I ordered a 4x4 Big Horn.....using Ramtrucks.com towing guide selector where you input cab selection, drive, bed length, axle ratio, engine, and model, it spits out the 2,990 max payload and 16,810 max towing... https://www.ramtrucks.com/towing/towing-guide.html

I'm thinking that I'll need to move to the 1 ton to be within the guidelines....I can't even see what the big difference is with the 3500 since the dimensions are the same but the 3500 is an extra 500 pounds curb weight and I believe it has leaf springs in the back instead of coils.

The other option is move to the Reflection 150 series 295RL and stick with the 2500....

Thanks for all the input so far!

Before my currant truck I had a 2018 Ram 2500 Tradesman 6.4, 4.10 CC LB 4x4. CCC was 2976. Deduct 280 lbs for the DW and I, 175 lbs for B&W Patriot, 50 lbs for running boards and I was left with 2471 lbs. Those were just the obvious items for weight reduction. I had all kinds of other stuff in the truck like most do.
The 5er I towed only had an 1800 lb pin weight but I was real close to the 10,000 GVWR of the truck.

I don't think they will until it is weighed at the end of the line (that liability thing if it isn't what they said). RAM is pretty good at posting the weight per the VIN once it is weighed. Best prior to that is several of the RAM forums have threads where people actually post a picture of the payload sticker.

Sounds like a lot of trailer for a 2500 especially with a gas motor. That thing will be wound up tighter than Dick's hatband on hills. All depends on your terrain I guess but I'm gonna say you might need a tad more truck for what you are going to pull. $.02
