Route 66 Timeframe

Thinking about traveling Route 66 this summer. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on if eight days would be enough to see entire Route 66, traveling
west to east.

That depends. If you want to stop in all the towns along the way, a few travel guides say a month or longer.

If you want to hit highlights along the route, find a guidebook (or Google) and pick 5 or 6 places you'd like to see.

Well, probably not. The length of Route 66 is 2,278 miles. That's one way. You'll be adding more miles for a round trip. Unless you just plan to travel every day. Or are you talking about just a portion of Route 66? Like only through, say, California and Arizona? Also, be aware, there are portions of Route 66 that are highways, not the quaint little road it used to be.

It would depend on how much of Route 66 you plan to cover, and if you plan on getting out of the car any.

You do realize it starts in Chicago and ends at Santa Monica pier? Even if you only do a smidgen of it, eight days is not enough to see very much. If you only have eight days, you only have eight days, but cut the mileage waaaay down, and stop a lot.

Some of it has been absorbed by interstates as said before. If your going to drag your trailer, some places you will need to bypass. Beware of the section out of Oatman to Kingman AZ. a trailer will never make it. I drove that from Kingman up...with my dually (no trailer) & it was white knuckle. Some curves were so tight the outside dual I think was hanging free off the road. And look out for the Burros

You need to get yourself a copy of “Route 66: EZ66 Guide for Travelers” by Jerry McClanahan. It’s the best. Jerry has had a life long passion for the Route. We used this guide for both of our trips on the Route. We took about 14 days on both trips doing the Route.

IMHO, a month isn't enough to "see" Route 66 - even the parts of it that are still intact. The advice above on things to see is good, though.
