    Dead Generator Battery

    Hello,

I have a dead generator battery, so the electronic start will not work.
...And for some reason, I cannot get the manual pully to start it either.

I tried to trickle charge it but that didn't seem to work.
...And I suppose there's no more to hooking up than to place red or red, and black on black?

I also own a heavy duty DieHard jump starter.
...But I was afraid if that's maybe too much power ...how would I know?

    Thanks!

The battery won't pull any more amperage than it can use, unless there are problems other than a dead battery. Is this the onboard generator? Can you pull the battery and charge it? A trickle charger will take quite a while to bring a dead battery back to a decent charge, several hours at least. A jump start goes red to red, black on the dead battery to frame/ground on the starting battery/vehicle.

    Thanks for replying.
Not exactly sure what an "onboard generator" is, but I'm guessing mine is NOT ...since I purchased it separately and I carry it in the back of my truck.
It's a Champion 3100W Portable inverter Generator that runs on gasoline or propane.

So it sounds like it would be safe to try and charge the generator battery with my Diehard jump starter? As for connecting the black to the "frame" -- the frame of what? Also, there's not much metal on this unit if that's what we're referring to?

With the jump starter, put the red(+) on red(+), and black(-) on black (-). Be sure to remove it as soon as the motor starts.

The frame I was referring to was if you were jumping from a vehicle.

Ah, OK -- yeah, I guess I could do that too!
Not sure if one of those ways is better than the other, but using my DieHard Jump Starter would be easier I guess

OK, I was able to start the Generator with jumper cables. However, it does not stay charged after running it for about 1 hour.
...Does this mean my battery is really no good?

If so, can I buy any 12V 7Ah / 20 Hr rechargeable sealed lead acid battery ...or do I need to make sure it's compatible with my particular generator, including the physical size to fit into it's place?

And interestingly, when I've jumped started it, the only fuel that works is Propane.
The Gasoline option does not work.
    ...What might this indicate?

Are you saying the generator battery won't stay charged? Is the generator charging the battery? Always good to check and make sure.

Yes, any battery with the proper ratings, and size will work.

As far as not running on gasoline, I'm not familiar with that generator and would hesitate to hazard a guess.

Is there gas in the tank?
If so, is there a gas valve that needs to be turned on?

Since it is a portable generator...... Doesn't it have a pull start?

Sounds like the battery is toast and needs to be replaced.

Also if you let it sit with gas in it for any long period of time your carb is likely in need of cleaning if it won’t run on gas.
