    Axle Upgrade on Reflection 367?

    Hello all-

We have recently completed a long trip (~24,000kms) with our 2021 Reflection 367BHS. Overall it handled the trip quite well, but we were generally running just under the max GAWR of 13,200 lbs (2x 6600# axles combined). After experiencing some uneven tire wear on the rear axle, I took it into the dealer and it was found that our rear axle is bent. I'm working through repair/replacement under warranty with the dealer, but in the meantime I'm looking into possibly upgrading to heavier duty axles, potentially dual 8000# to give us more of a buffer. I would likely also look at changing out the brakes to disc at the same time.

Just wondered if any of you have done this, and/or have any recommendations on this? I would be looking to have an Axle & Spring shop do this for me - it's out of my scope of knowledge for sure.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Do you know from visiting the scales what your weight is? The GVWR of that unit is listed at 15,000 lbs., so you should only be looking at about 12,000 lbs. on the axles if your loaded to the GVWR. Or is the GVWR of your trailer different from that?

Thanks for your reply - Our GVWR is the stock 14,995# but we run heavy. At the beginning of our trip when we were heaviest we scaled in with just under 13,200 on the axles with 1/3 tank of fresh. Any extra weight was moved forward to land on the pin as we had excess payload available on the truck. Been looking at alternate rigs with higher GVWR but we really like the 367 so are looking at options to make it work for us. Thanks!

I know the feeling. We've been considering upgrading to 8,000 lb. axles on our 351M, as we are over our GVWR of 16,800 lbs. by about 500 lbs. We too really like the layout and feel that's it very close to perfect for us. Looking at https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Lea...2460-2570.html, but for 8,000 lb. axles. They offer the 8,000 lb. axles as an option for the 351 so they would most likely work. Until we decide, we'll watch and wait.

Good luck with your decision! That kit is what I was looking at earlier myself - it seems solid and well reviewed. Thanks again!

I'm having Performance Trailer Braking come to my residence to do an 8K axle and disc brake conversion next April for my Solitude. Parts were around $4,500 and installation will be around $1,300. I checked with a local GD dealer and they were over $8,000 total.

Upgrading axles and brakes is good... just be sure to not overspring (springs rated significantly higher than the weight they will be carrying). To much stiffening of the suspension system will make for a harsh ride that puts extra wear and tear on the coach. When MORryde installs the independent suspension systems - whether you get the 7K or 8K units - they match the rubber shear springs to the actual weight on the wheels. This makes for a beefy suspension system with the cushion and travel needed to be nice to the chassis and superstructure.

Thanks for this - it is very helpful! We are in Canada, so pricing will likely vary compared to you, but this is an excellent starting point. Cheers!

Rob, Greatly appreciate the reminder about this! In a perfect world the MoRyde IS system would be the ultimate choice for me. Unfortunately being located in Canada it is pretty much out of the question given the distance we'd need to travel to have it installed, and the wait times for them right now are apparently running into 2023!

Currently considering 8k axles with the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper system. My local trailer service shop is recommending sticking with oversized electric drum brakes on the 8k axles, saying they have excellent stopping power and good cost/benefit. Would be curious to hear others thoughts on this!

    Cheers

While I would like the benefits of disc brakes on the trailer, I am going to stick with the electric brakes. Everybody that has them, disc brakes that is, loves them, but then after you've spent $2,500-$3,000 what else would you say? But maybe I'll win the lottery and do it after all. But people tell me you have to play to win, and that seems a bit unfair to me.
