IMO, with kids, look into Cherokee NC for the mountains piece. The KOA is super nice, but they are also super proud, ei, expensive, but you pretty much don't have to leave the resort if you don't want to. If your from out of state, you can purchase fishing permit for trout without buying a non resident license. And for the beach, check out Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe. Or Frisco Woods Campground in Frisco, NC. If SC beaches and amenities are what your looking for either Lakewood or Ocean Lakes offer tons to do in South Myrtle Beach area.

So here's the itinerary we settled on. We live in the Chicago area so.....

    1 Night - Brown County/Nashville KOA
3 Nights - Pigeon Forge KOA
3 Nights - Ashville East KOA
8 Nights - Carolina Pines, SC
4 Nights - Holiday Trav-L-Park Emerald Isle, NC
3 Nights - Cape Hatteras KOA, Outer Banks
1 Nights - Busch Gardens KOA, Williamsburg, VA
3 Nights - Yogi Bear's Jellystone, Luray, VA
3 Nights - Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH
    Home

Lot of driving, but should get to hit 4 National Parks, 2 water parks, 2 theme parks, and a whole lotta ocean.

I wish my parents would have done this when I was a kid!

Sounds like a great plan. Check out camp hatteras in lieu of koa. It's cheaper and the sites are much nicer. There's not much to do in Rodanthe, but they are directly on the beach.

    Nice plan!
Word of warning on crowds: Pigeon Forge area is now the #1 tourist destination in the US, according to my buddy that has a rental cabin there. Rte 321 through town is always very, very heavy on the traffic.
If you don't mind no sewer connection, but want to get away from the crowds - Douglas Lake has 2 TVA CGs, Headwaters above the damn, and Tailwaters below the dam. We've stayed at Headwaters 2x and it's great - large spaces, lots of grass, lots of lake views. It is about 30 minutes into the center of it all, so it's not as centrally located as the KOA. Depends on what you want to do there - chill or touristy stuff!

Check out the Luray Caverns while you are there, we enjoyed that area. Dont forget Busch Gardens has the theme park and a water park, Water Country down the road.

If you haven't been on your trip yet, try Carolina Pines in Conway, SC. Water park, put put, pool, heated pool, corn hole, etc. It's truly a kids playground and they have free shuttles to Myrtle Beach.
