    Battery Disconnect/Shore Power

While the Grand Design unit is in storage, we have been told to turn the battery disconnect switch to off and not keep the unit plugged into shore power. If short time storage ( 4 weeks of less) is it okay to keep it plugged into shore power with the battery on or do we run the risk of over charging and drying out/burning up the battery? Also if the battery disconnect switch is off is it still powering certain components? A typical battery charger will shut off when it receives a full charge, does this battery in the unit not operate this way?

It is safe to keep plugged in. You should check your water level in the battery every 30 days. Yes, there are things still powered up even when the disconnect switch is off. The only way to do that properly is to pull the ground cable off the battery.

If we're not camping, our unit is at home plugged in. I check the battery level twice yearly and seldom add much water to top up.

Ours is always plugged in at home too. In 6 years in our old TT I had to add water once. A little over a year in Grand Design, no water added yet. We also leave the refrig and a/c on all the time too, don't know if that helps or not.

There is the same question being asked in the Tech Corner and Janice, from GD, claims we should not leave them plugged in to shore power for extended periods. A few of us are asking for clarification so you might want to check over there and see what we hear.

Like Scot, Specularius and Dave have said, mine is always plugged in.

If it is full time rated, wouldn't it be plugged in all the time?

I'd think that if the rig is being stored for months that pulling the battery and putting it on a trickle charger would be better than continually charging via the inverter/converter as would be done when plugged into shore power. That's what I've done storing motorcycles, mowers, etc over the years.

Of course saying that, I am a full-timer and we're always plugged in except during our time on the road from park to park.
