One option is Goose Island State Park in Fulton. About a 45 min drive to Port A. But a great place to stay if you want to see the WC's up close. To the east of the park is Aransas Nat'l Wildlife Refuge where the cranes winter.

Several years ago the blue crabs in the bay got scarce due to a drought, so a few local residents close to the park put feeders in their yards. The cranes came in to the feeders everyday and we could get as close as 50 yards. Fun watching these rare birds.

We have good friends from MI that serve as "bird hosts" at Goose Island SP in Jan and FEb. They lead bird walks about 4 times each week.

We stayed 2 weeks during January a couple of years ago at Aloha Beach. It is well kept and nice facilities. It is tight quarters for a big rig especially in the evening when everyone is back in their space so if you do it I recommend arriving and departing mid day. There are some interesting restaurants in Port A I will look them up and get back to you. You probably have already researched all of the wildlife refuges but we enjoyed Aransas National Wildlife Refuge the most and I think we visited them all from Aransas to South Padre.

Restaurants I was thinking of were La Playa and Seafood & Spaghetti Works. Also want to mention that if you can’t find a place in Port A, move south. If you go north your shortest way to Port A is on the ferry which can be time consuming.

Thanks Grandesigner for the info. I don't think we will be out there that late in the year.

I'd call now to see if they can get you in. The premium spots are much nicer and away from the main road (Top of their RV site map) so spend the extra money for a premium spot. There is a boardwalk thru the dunes to the beach, about 100 yards away.

Thanks Sportsdad60 for your help. I was able to book a premium pull thru for 2/20-2/27.
