Power Converter WFCO 55 amp Repair

Last year around this same time our converter went out. At the time we needed it repaired ASAP, so we went to the nearest Camping World and they had it in stock, I replaced and we were back in business. I kept the old converter and thought if I had nothing else to do I would see if I could repair it. I worked repairing electronics for 25 years.
Anyway I finally got around to it a year later setting out the cold weather. I found one of the components on the mother board had a broken leg just above the soldered joint. Using my pin soldering iron and solder sucker I removed the component, resoldered it on the mother board then used some additional nonconductive glue to secure it to the adjoining component for increased stability from vibrations. The converter is not shock mounted to the floor. After partial reassembly plugged it in and viola! 110VAC in - 12DC out - it works!!! I left my multimeter on it for awhile thumping the side of the converter, yup still working. Cool!! Now we have a spare. Yup, I know the WFCO converters are not the best of the bunch but hey its working now and we have a spare.

Good job! I love the sense of accomplishment when successfully repairing devices.

My favorite tool to troubleshoot defective circuit boards when you had a good one to compare it to was was a Huntron tracker. No schematics or documentation necessary.

I think you missed an opportunity to get a good convertor.... I would not have bought another WFCO..... Heck I have seen them given away on forums... In fact I have a near new one taken from my 398M.... If I did not toss it in the trash... Not sure.

    Glad you got it going!

I replaced my WFCO with a Progressive Dynamics. I kept the WFCO and it makes a great 12vdc bench power supply. Also used it as a battery charger.
