New Post starting from old post comment?

Is there a way to start a new post by replying to a comment in an existing post? Don't want to derail the existing post but do want to ask a question in the same vein but not what the OP had started.
    Thanks,
    John

I don’t think you can, but you can start your new post, then go back to the original and link to your new post. Probably the next best alternative.

You could copy what you want to reference out of the original thread and paste that into a new thread of your own (using the"@" sign plus the user name of the person you're referencing like this: @ajg617). That way, the person you are referencing will get a notification and you can start your new thread the way you want.

If you hit “Reply with Quote” in the original thread, select the entire text that is inserted into your reply, copy it, start a new thread and paste the copied text into your post in the new thread, it will be similar to what you want. The quoted post below is an answer of mine in another thread from a few weeks ago:

BTW, charged batteries won’t freeze until -90F, so no real need to keep them inside. Just keep them charged.
Then you can use the @ before their username in your comment to get their attention as Rob suggested to bring them into the conversation.

Also note that clicking the little arrows on the right side of the quote box will take you back to the original thread if anyone wants to see it.
