Traveling in sub 32 degree weather?
Hello, new to the site but, have reap lots of great information already. Thank you
I plan on buying a 2021 28G in Montana from a private party next week. I would like to camp my way back to Ca. So I planned on camping and traveling in freezing temps for at least two days following purchase (if all goes well) The trailer will be empty but, I will have de-winterized it to go through all the systems before buying. My question is can I blow out the lines with my Viair 450P RV tire pump or will I actually need a compressor to blow out my water lines before traveling for the day? The Viair isn't high volume like the compressor would be. So, I started thinking (which is usually dangerous for me) would it work to just open and close one fixture at a time to build pressure and then release it to get the water out of the three lines? (shower, kitchen and bathroom faucet) since I don't usually camp in this cold of temps I thought I'd see what the collective group thought. Would it even work? or is the risk greater than the benefit of not carrying another piece of equipment? ie. separate compressor. Thanks again, looking forward to joining the GD family.

That may work although I am unfamiliar with the 450 RV Tire Pump. I live in the NW and winterize with compressed air from a compressor. Pretty same procedure you are considering but don't forget to open the low point drains located under the trailer. Also, the water heater may need to be drained every day during your travels. Good luck.

I have the knock off version of that pump from Harbor Freight. Nope, won't supply sufficient volume to do much. I'd get a separate compressed air tank, with a regulator. First fill from a gas station (just for ease). Then use your compressor to refill as needed. It may still take a couple of fills. May take a bit of time, especially if the compressor gets hot. Best to see how long it takes to refill, and how hot the compressor gets, before heading out.
OR...rewinterize with RV antifreeze at time of purchase, bring jugs of water with in the truck, and plan on just not using the plumbing at all for the trip back. Use public restrooms.
OR...rewinterize with RV antifreeze at time of purchase, and stay in motels on the way back.
OR...if your stops have water, plane on a routine of RV antifreeze in the morning, flush it out when you stop.
How long will you be in sub-freezing conditions? Depending on how long and the temps, you may be fine just opening the low point drains to empty all lines by gravity each morning before you leave wherever you have stopped. I've gotten by with 2 days with temps near 30 during the day and 20 at night. But I wouldn't try it if colder...
No point to leaving the heater on - unsafe, and you'll just waste gas. The tank full will take a long time to cool down and freeze. The stub lines from the bypass valves to the heater may be a a bit of a risk, again depending on how cold. So better to just drain it each morning.Last edited by sande005; 12-21-2021 at 01:46 PM.

Heater is propane and runs on 12 VDC. Why not just leave the heater on and set it for something like 60F?

There is the argument about safety - especially at fueling stops. (Yes, I run with my fridge on). The wind chill from driving at 60-70 could easily suck the small amount of heat provided to the underbelly out and still freeze those lines, again depending on the actual air temp. +20 to +30 is one thing. -20 another.....

Immediately after you go through the systems check with the private seller have him show you how to properly winterize it. ...
I would open the low point drains and use a jug to collect as much of the RV antifreeze that's presently in the lines. Open every faucet, flush the toilet line, open the outside shower faucet. You'll get most of the Antifreeze out of the system and you can save it to reuse in the sink/shower traps. Bring a few gallons of new Antifreeze with you for the winterizing instructions....the seller should have an air compressor to show you how to blow out the lines. Also bring a few gallons of water for toilet use and "washing up" on your return trip. Just dump a gallon of antifreeze in the toilet and you'll be ok to use it on your trip home with water from the water jugs.Bill & Colleen ~ Schwenksville, Pa

I'd winterize it after checking it out. Get some water jugs & keep 'em in the shower. You can use the water to flush toilet, heat it on the stove to spit bath with if your only talking a couple of days. The water shouldn't hurt the holding tanks. Dump the water when you get to California...unless you're bringing it near where I am-haven't seen the 30's in over a week.
