Winterizing Black Tank Flush
For those who winterize, do you do the Black Tank Flush as well? I didn’t on my reflection & didn’t do it on my solitude (never thought of it) but now I’m worried/paranoid because I read how it should be done.
It’s cold as hell here, but I’m wondering if I should go pump some antifreeze in to it. I did the rest of the system just not the black tank flush.
Thanks

I thought about the same thing a few days after I was done winterizing and everything was put away. I don't believe that there is an easy way to get it done using the RV's onboard pump unless there is lots of antifreeze in the fresh water tank. If you look at the black tank flush line you'll see that it leaves the Nautilus panel and goes up into a wall (usually behind the shower) and has a backflow check valve at the high point and then goes back down to the tank. That's why you always get a decent amount of water come back out when you disconnect the water hose from the hookup at the Nautilus panel. My water line had just a slight low spot in that loop but not enough to hold any significant amount of water. This year I just blew some air through it and left it at that. The previous 2 years I never did anything with it and it was fine. At this point I wouldn't try blowing air into anything unless I ran my furnace for a day or two which would heat up the storage area. A small amount of water laying in a short section of pipe isn't going to hurt anything if it freezes as long as it's got a place to expand in both directions.Bill & Colleen ~ Schwenksville, Pa

I just hook my air adapter to it and blow it out for a few seconds...same as the rest of the trailer.

FWIW I never winterized the black tank rinse in the 11 years we owned our last toyhauler, and never had any issues. But I did blow out the lines to the black tank rinses on our new-to-us Momentum.

They make a hand pump to use to winterize the black tank flush lines.

Here in the higher elevation of PA, it's a must do. I have a very simple way I do it. Just a 4 foot length of garden that I thread into the port just a bit loose, fill with RV antifreeze and tighten when it forces the air out, and then thread on my blowout adapter, crank the compressor way down, connect, and let it push the antifreeze in. In years past, I also used a simple fluid transfer pump - dedicated $10 special and just enough pressure to open the backflow - with a barb adapter. It broke so I switched to the current method.

I've just run air through my black tank flush line for the two winters I've owned my trailer. We normally have very mild winters, but last year was the Great Texas Blizzard. Temps below freezing for a week, getting down below zero for a couple of nights. No issue with the line freezing.

Interesting topic, I have never winterized that. Got me thinking now.
