Yes, OP asked about slides out, but also stated jacking at the axle

Slides in or out doesnt matter if you are jacking the axle up since the frame would not change orientation. If the OP asked about jacking the frame with the slides in or out would be a different story.

Definitely agree though, slides should be in if jacking will be performed on the frame vice the axles.

Fair enough. I have Sumo Springs on my 320MKS, so jacking at the axles effectively lifts the coach.

That makes sense, good point though. I dont recall any discussions about people with sumo springs jacking up their axles. Completely understandable with that setup, you would need to be more conscious of the slide position while jacking the axle.

That was why I asked what the stabilizer leg situation was. IMO with 6-leg auto level, there is no danger of twisting the frame with the slides open and jacking one tire up enough to do brake/wheel bearing maintenance. If it had been front/rear stabilizers only I would have thought differently. JMO of course.

@alkbch: as Rob started above, do not jack it up on one side, out of level, with the slides out. The torsion on the frame could likely bend it. The problems with a slightly bent frame will range from not taking straight (dog legging) to the slide(s) not fitting and not closing or opening all the way.

As a rule of thumb, slides IN if you are going to have the coach to an unlevel plane.

Since my trailer is much smaller and lighter than the OP's, I don't have any ill effects from raising one wheel from under the u bolts with my slide deployed. I do jack it with a block of wood on top of the jack. With a much heavier and larger 5th wheel I would be concerned.

I would always have the slides in when doing any tire/bearing work. Another thought is that with the slides in, its alot easier to do your bearings without having the crawl under the slide. Just my .02.

If the slides are out doesn't that make it harder to access the wheels? On our camper I would be crawling under the slides. Doesn't make sense to me.

It's a minor point, you're going to be sitting down below the level of the slide in order to access the wheel, so it would be a bit more inconvenient to get there, but not so much once you're there.

As others have alluded to, if you're using a floor jack on one wheel at a time, the frame doesn't go anywhere.

That is what I did this time. I am not big in jacking up by the axle

You have easy lube axels. No repaking needed. Look up video of repaking easy lube axels and proceed. The service dept at your dealer will tell you different. Merritt

I agree with you both it would be easier to do it with the slides in, but as full-timers our slides are rarely in.

Since this is the first time I will perform this maintenance, I also want to inspect the bearings and replace the seals. I may use the EZ Lube system afterward.
