I'd go with the 3.55 gears. I have them in my 2013 F350 and have no issues towing our 12,000 toy hauler in the mountain west.

I did actually test drive a used F450 and LOVED it. All the folks that talk about the turning radius are spot-on….that thing turns on a dime! Drove an F350 as well. I’d call it’s radius pretty similar to my current 2500HD Chevy. I’ve got a little time to change the order yet, and I may well do that. Thanks for the input!

I’m all for the 450 as well for the money. But just for consideration, take a look at the tire difference (22.5 vs ~ 18). For some people the 22.5 is a negative due to options/expense. Others like it for hauling.

With 1000lb/ft and the new 10spd, either gear will pull well as you’ve heard.

I would have liked to have gone with an F-450, but they capped the GVWR on that truck such that the payload capacity is 1200lbs less than an F-350. With the genny I want to get + aux fuel tank, I would be close to the max. Maybe I shouldn’t worry about that, but…
I'm at 4710 lbs payload if that helps on 450 vs 350. Can't get much more in trim options. It's about 690 lbs less than comparable 350. 1200 lbs is a bit extreme in difference I think.

I'll agree, my F350 DRW I had, was around 5300lbs on payload.

Ah…the 450 I looked at was 4786lb payload, decked out Platinum. The 1200 diff was from a Ford brochure, but it’s so hard to know what they used to come up with those numbers, you could easily be exactly right. Anyone have a 350 CCLB dually 6.7 diesel Platinum payload number?

I can't help on the payload, but the 3.55 will be more than enough with the 10 speed. I have an F-350 SRW on order with the 7.3 and I'm opting for 3.73 gearing. I live in MO, and it's far more rolling than MI, but if we decide to make a trip out west I have confidence it will be ok for that once or twice in it's life it sees true mountains. It will also be my daily driver and I want a little better MPG for the 90% of the time I'm not towing.

I'm currently driving an 18 F-150 with a 3.5EB, 10 speed and 3.55 gears. Before this truck I had a 13 with the 6 speed and 3.31. The new truck gets better gas milage and has more a lot more low end torque than the older one despite having basically the engine. It accelerates with my current travel trailer without much issue. Not an apples to apples comparison but the 10 speed is a game changer. If I were getting your truck, I'd get the 3.55 and never look back. You'll have much more torque with the diesel than I currently have.

I also wouldn't expect Ford to take less than 6 months. There are currently delays on several options, one of which is the factory 5th wheel prep.

Minor point but the F450 comes with 19.5" rims. not 22.5". Tire availability is still limited compared to 17, 18 and 20" rims. The F350 dually comes with 17" rims. The F250 and F350 SRW come in 18" or 20" depending on the trim level and/or options chosen. All of these have different section widths and aspect ratios and hence different rolling diameters.

I honestly couldn’t tell a difference. The 350 I drove was an SRW. I cant say either is any different than my 2500HD 4x4 Z71 Chevy. The turning radius is pretty amazing.
