    Ferry Galveston to Bolivar Peninsula

Yesterday the wife and I were looking for something to do, we are staying in Galveston Texas for a month, so we decided to take the ferry over to the Bolivar Peninsula for lunch. We were disappointed in the Bolivar side, not much there, but we did notice a new RV park being constructed, looked pretty nice, all level concrete sites and nice power/water pedestals. We think it's called The Ranch.
The ferry ride is free, not much is free now days, it's a pretty good dolphin watching tour. Beside watching the dolphins, the ferry passes real close to SeaWolf Park where a WWII Destroyer Escort and Submarine are permanent. You get real close to the USS Selma a shipwreck in the Houston Ship Cannel. The trip takes about 15 minutes once you leave the dock. Once away from the dock you can get out of your vehicle and stand along the rails. Pretty neat! If you are lucky as we were coming back, two giant cargo ships passed each other in the channel, and our ferry had to slow down and wait till they passed close by. Once in the ships wake, I felt the ferry rolling with the swells, haven't felt that since my Navy days, brought a smile to my face. Wife stayed in our 1 ton, said she could feel it rolling with the ferry.

The ferry can handle semi's, RVs and of course cars and trucks. It is a nice short cut to and from Galveston, Port Arthur and Beaumont.

Just heard recently that the sister ship to my old aircraft carrier USS Constellation CV-64 the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 is in route to Brownsville Texas for cutting up salvage. These were the first aircraft carriers to be designated as SuperCarriers back in the 1960's. The Navy sold the Kitty Hawk to a salvage company for 1 penny. My old ship the Connie was cut up 6-8 years ago.

Took the ferry with our rig after staying in Galveston for a week as a shortcut to Louisiana. Fun ride with the dolphins accompanying.

I probably haven't been on that ferry in 30 or so years. Never was much doing on the Bolivar. Ferry is nice though! Thanks for the memories.
