    Bridge Tunnels

    Here in Virginia Beach we have several bridge tunnels. Since they are tunnels I believe you have to stop and get checked before heading through. Has anyone had much experience dealing with this? I'm pretty sure for most of my trips I can just go an alternate route, but if I do go through a tunnel I want to be prepared. Any recommendations or things to be aware of?
    I'm thinking it's probably going to be easier to take the extra 30 or so minutes to just not go through a tunnel. What do you all think?

    What several of us have done is purchase the low clearance database from http://lowclearances.com and created the POIs in Google Maps. Me personally, I plan my route via RV Life Trip Wizard, then put it into Google maps so I can check the low clearances.

    If I remember correctly, it has something about propane tanks, they don't want flammables in the tunnels.

    We've done a number of the tunnels in Virginia - mostly around Norfolk and environs. As long as your propane tanks are closed, you're OK. As for overhead clearance, we use a Garmin RV GPS. With these GPSs (like the Garmin Dezl models for truckers), one enters your rigs' parameters (height, width, length, GVWR, yes/no on propane, etc.) and the GPS steers you around places you shouldn't be - whether it be for clearance, flammables, width, length or weight.

    @eodrunner,

    A few forum tips:

    1) If you use "Reply With Quote" (to the right of "Reply") as I have here, folks will know to whom you are responding and that person will get a notification.

    2) You can also tag folks using the "@" symbol and their user name (as I have done yours) - they'll also get a notification that way.

    Don't skip the Chesapeake Bay bridge. Beautiful. You won't have any problems, just turn off propane tanks.

    Live right in the middle of that area now and we have been through just about all of them. Make sure your propane is off. If it has a toll booth (Chesapeake Bay) they’ll ask if your propane is off at the window. Every now and then one of them will have the inspection area open and will want you to stop there to ask the same question. Minimal time lost. Otherwise, if a semi can drive through it, so can you.

    Tunnels can run from no restrictions, to turning off your propane tanks, to no propane allowed.
